basically speaking, as long as the person genuinely thinks the direction they are praying in is correct at the start of the prayer, its considered good enough.
Commander Sinclair on Babylon 5 said it best when commenting on the multitude of religions on Earth:
"I don't think God cares how we say our prayers, that we say them at all is enough."
I suppose that actually makes sense. I mean, exactly how accurately do they need to be pointing at mecca? At some point the general direction of the planet should be reasonable.
Rotating mat sounds pretty cool, though.
The ISS is orbiting around the earth every 40 minutes or so at a stable speed and zero effects to rotation so defining the 4 directions is really easy, as for the praying direction the person has to face the same qibla direction as the place they launched off from
