Meh. Maybe so maybe no. It’s largely irrelevant. We already seen that almost anyone who supports him would support him if he threw a puppy in a wood chipper and blamed the Clintons. Almost Anyone who doesn’t support him wouldn’t support him if he personally cured cancer tomorrow. Facts mean nothing anymore. If anyone even had the audacity to try to independently verify the truth, about half of people would call it a witch hunt and then another almost half would declare him guilty before the investigation finished- and whatever the result was, one of those groups of not both would say that it was all a fraud by <insert cartoon political villain of choice here.>
Yeah. It makes me sad too. We’ve changed much as a society in recorded history and even the last century- but some of the worst parts of our nature, the most primitive parts, they endure to this day. We like to think we are so much smarter or wiser or better than people we read about in history books. We ask how they could have done or believed some of the things they did that were so “dumb.” And yet- we can’t see it when we ourselves are creating the history the future will laugh at when they look back at their “dumb” and senseless ancestors. It all really comes down to selfishness. It’s less even about beliefs and more about what we personally want or think we will get out of something. Not everyone who participated in slavery or segregation was racist or believed the propaganda of the time on race. People who benefitted from them simply didn’t want to give up those benefits even if it meant life or death for someone else.
It isn’t so much “right vs left” even, or “racists vs non racists” in 2020. It’s the self centered and the exploiters vs those who care about other human beings. You’ll find people who want a wall not because they are racist- but because that somehow benefits them or they believe it will; but just the same you have people who want raise minimum wage or regulate industries or whatever else- more because of the benefits or opportunities they would see than how it helps others. It’s a nice bonus or a convenient mask for a self serving agenda. And of course you have those who will go whichever way at the moment on any issue they see to be the most beneficial to themselves.
It’s fear and jingoism and appeals to people’s basal natures without even pretext of trying to be higher minded. And sadly... a good number of people have bought in to a primitive tribalism and decided that they aren’t going to bother trying to understand the issues or figure out who is the best leader- they’ll vote for whoever they think is closest to their own instincts. When selfish people vote for selfish people... everyone loses.
But I am talking about ideals/beliefs
