Yes explosions can cause expansions... expansions of air in a space of area. The difference is that the big bang was an expansion of space itself. This is something an explosion cannot do.
Well, the literal definition is: a violent and destructive shattering or blowing apart of something, as is caused by a bomb.
I mean, as it rapidly created spacetime, it doesn't fit the idea of it being destructive, although it was probably pretty violent.
