I do this but with the electric scooters at walmart, because I help an older woman. I am very insistent on it, because that's good karma. Plus, we've been in situations where we couldn't get one while her legs were giving out, because no one would bring them back in. I think last time I did it, I brought it back in while they were completely out and an older man needed it. PSA: always bring back in those scooters if you are physically able!
Using a shopping cart as some sort of scooter to "crash" it at its rightful place in the file of carts is the absolute best part of grocery shopping and people who don't do it are missing on something.
It's still wild to me that Americans can just leave their carts wherever. Pretty much every german/european supermarket has those carts you can only get with a coin. And you can bet we want that 1€ back lol. Actually I've never been to a supermarket where that's not the norm. It just makes sense.
I knew that the cashier's bagged the groceries in the US .. but didn't even cross my mind that they weren't allowed to sit down. I'm just thinking it would take extra time having the cashier bag the groceries too.. I'm often done bagging when they have swiped it all, so I just pay and leave.. would feel weird just standing there watching.. but I guess that's just because I'm used to how it is in Europe (although only lived in the UK and Sweden)
I never really paid attention to whether they were sitting or not, but now that you mention it, I feel like they do. Also, they always have an extra cart, so while you are putting everything onto the conveyor belt, they scan it all and load it into a new cart. Then you push the cart to long shelf thing where you can bag all of your stuff.
Usually we have 2 people at the tills, one ringing up the items and one bagging them. And I guess management thinks that sitting down makes you look lazy so you aren't allowed to, at least thats the reason we were told when I worked at a grocery store
There's a supermarket in NZ where cashiers don't bag, Pak n Save

I don't know ablut your supermarket. But here in mexico we have "cerilleros" that are basically people that survive on tips who bag your stuff. Normally children or the elderly
Some grocery stores in this area hire people with special needs to bag groceries and bring the carts back inside. They are employees though, so they are paid - they don't typically get tips.
You also have to bag your own shit and the cashiers are allowed to sit, right?
