I remember this from the news at the time. We were all rooting for the Baltic Nations. The USSR sent some tanks in to the capitols, as they tended to do, but it was too late as the Soviet collapsed and every part wanted sovereignty.
Yup, this thing was part of the "Singing Revolution", a series of protests and festivals where people would sing folk songs to push against the russification of their countries. In other words, these guys defeated the USSR by singing songs and holding hands. Mad respect.
