Just as a fact: the flag raised by O'Connor was not the Green white and orange flag of Ireland today but was a green flag with a golden harp which read "Erin Go Bragh" (Ireland forever) as the tricolour had yet to been adopted. The harp on a green background was traditionally used by Irish nationalists to represent Ireland (eg. The Fenians) until the modern tricolour was gifted by the French to Thomas Francis Meagher
Guess why I hated Junior year of high school? I was too proud to admit I needed help, so everyone (parents) would badger me into asking when I really didn't want to. I was also not doing very well. If I could tell one thing to my younger self, it would be "suck up your pride" for this reason.

I don't think I've ever found pride as a source of shame, that seems contradictory. Explain?
You can't really feel shame if your pride hasn't been damaged in some way. If you steal something and feel bad about it, it's because you have pride in yourself, and you haven't lived up to that expectation. Someone who has no personal pride won't feel that shame.
Ohh...personal pride.
I thought you were talking about something like
"I'm proud to be an archer, but I'm ashamed I didn't get first place"
And I was all like
That's not bruised pride, that's disappointment.
It's entirely possible to be ashamed in that archery example as well. It's not a particularly healthy way to look at failure, but it can obviously happen, and too much pride can definitely be a cause in that.
At the time England still claimed ownership of the entirety of Ireland, he was forbidden from flying his own flag and was made to play for the "British" team. When they went to raise the union flag he defied his oppressors by climbing the pole and flying a flag of Ireland. This wasn't too long before there was massive support in Ireland for being separate from the Brits. So basically he flew the Irish flag instead of the one the English wanted him to fly because that was not his flag and he wanted to represent the Irish people and Ireland
Oh, and it doesn't seem as though any nation has a swallowtail flag. The state of Ohio does, and several countries have a swallowtail design for their naval ensign, but no national flags...

The U.S. flag not dipping isn't about Americans being jerks, the United States just has very strict flag etiquette. Flags that have touched the ground must be burned ceremonially by either soldiers or Boy Scouts. People are supposed to put their hand over their heart or salute when the flag passes by. It is to be folded a certain way. It is to be taken down at night unless there is a spotlight on it. And, yes, there is a rule about bowing the flag to anyone. Even the president of the United States doesn't warrant the flag to bow. It is a thing of tradition, etiquette, and national pride.
Sincerely,
An Eagle Scout, Colorgaurd, and United States Air Force Second Lieutenant.
We're assholes...
