Sugar is required by the body, particularly the brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is naturally produced in your brain, and levodopa (L-DOPA) is used therapeutically to treat Parkinsons. And alcohol was made illegal for a considerable amount of time. As far as I know, there were attempts to make both caffeine and tobacco illegal in the US.
Funny thing though: morphine (= endorphine) and thc (anandamide) are also naturally produced in your body. Funny assumption: if a state/country made alcohol, caffeine and tobacco illegal, it would cause riots.
Oh, and Tylerchu: you're wrong as usual:

We tried that. It ended badly. Humanity and alcohol have a looooong relationship, and even when we try to break up with it, we always end up going back when times are tough.
Yeah but alcohol is much less strong than heroine or some shit and to get drunk you need to have quite a lot. I'm not saying it isn't a drug because it is, but you don't necessarily get add it ed to it straight away like another type of drug
Actually, a lot of the old addiction studies on rats didn't control for a couple of important variables. It turns out that it's actually pretty hard to get rats addicted to heroin/cocaine/etc. when they have the options of social interaction and other forms of stimulation. The most you tend to get is I guess what you'd call "recreational use." If, however, you put them in cages by themselves, wall them off from other rats, and provide them no means of entertaining themselves, you'll get yourself a lab full of tiny depressed addicts.
