I'm all for a straight pride parade and international men's day. Why not?
White history doesn't need a month, though, because black history month isnt just to celebrate black people. Black history month is to honor the history of equality and how we've gotten to this point, even if its not perfect yet. Maybe Equal Rights month would be more fitting.
Don't get me wrong, men face some very real challenges and those should be discussed. However, gay pride, black history month and international women's day are all about oppressed subcultures. Taking a moment to honor individuals in those minorities, as is done during black history month gives children role models that look like them in a world dominated by white male faces.
I keep forgetting that we want equality, but only on some issues.
The holocaust didn't start with gas chambers, but with creating a division between groups. I realize that is an over exaggeration, but saying one group should be honored while others can't does a lot more harm down the road than you realize. You're telling kids that those who don't have special days honoring them are considered superior or not opressed, and thus you're telling them if they fit in any of those other groups they are oppressed, and will never be equal. I never said to take away gays/blacks/women's days. I'm saying add one for straights/men and keep society moving towards equality.
There's so much more I could write, but I feel it'll only fall on deaf ears.
We already spend a lot of time celebrating European culture without a special day. The others are compensating.
.... try looking at it this way. There is the Iwo Jima War Monument in DC. Like most of the memorials up at that time, it was Caucasian men. Really I have no judgement in that, but later a memorial was put up including women and then another with African America soldiers. Nothing was taken away from the original, but they added something to be more inclusive.
That's exactly what I'm saying, though? You literally just defended my argument.
Don't take away gay pride or women's day, just add a straight pride and men's day.
Same with your friendly neighbor the Czech Republic. At least with the fathers' day, not sure about men's day. We have a kids' day, too. I was never a fan of these celebrations, though. Coddling people for something they were born with and couldn't ever influence doesn't seem the wisest thing to do imho. For something they or their community achieved, yes. But not really for being of a certain race or gender etc.
The thing is, in society, straight is the thing that most people consider 'natural', so we don't particularly need a Straight Pride Parade. If we lived in a world where the minority was straight, then we would have straight pride day.
So if something is considered 'natural', it shouldn't be celebrated? If a woman has a 'natural' childbirth, I should run up and stop her? But only if most people think it was 'natural'? I don't understand your reasoning. On the 4th of July, did you run around throwing sand in people's faces because believing it's 'natural' to celebrate the love your country is wrong because what most people think should be downplayed? We don't 'particularly need' any parades, they are for fun and claiming they exist based on what other people believe just tells me you're one the outside looking in and you don't know jack shit.
Now looking back on my previous comment, I did not word it well enough. What I was trying to say was: It was the 'easiest' (I guess you could say) thing to be because no one is going to come up to you and say you are going to hell if you are straight (let's just assume that they have never done anything to be told they they are going to hell). Where there is always going to be the Westboro Baptist Church to go to the extreme and telling people that are attracted to the same sex that they are going to go to hell, of my knowledge, there has not been a church, or anything really, that has told a completely straight person that they are going to hell. Whereas if straight people where the minority, we could have a straight pride parade. It really just goes back to the reason we have a gay pride parade, the oppression (especially of not being able to marry) brought them to it. (I'm not sure if that made sense because I'm too lazy to go back and re-read it)
honestly, why isnt there a cemetery for living people? giving the outrageous number of ____-phobes and assholes around it would not be a problem to fill it, i believe.
*bonds*
And by the way, I don't really think there needs to be parades. Some people see them as obnoxious. And there shouldn't be a white history month, because white comes from all over. There shouldn't even be a black one. There are so many different "blacks". But men's day should exist if there is a woman's day. I didn't get things in order, what I meant was that two out of the 5 made sense.
It is true, but mean are often biased against. Lots of domestic violence that goes overlooked because they should be tough or some shit, they usually don't get to keep the kid, stuff like that. Women have it worse but men still have it bad.
any celebration that carters to a specific group only works to segregate us and keeps the country from truly unifying. the problem isn't, not adding these days. it is not eliminating them. when we turn black history month to "American history month" we can celebrate all things Americans did, despite their color. we need to start celebrating the country as a whole, and not as a characteristic of the few.
Y'all. All we are taught is white history and achievement. All that society normalizes is heterosexuality. Fashion, entertainment, and media disproportionally glorify European features above other ethnicities. These days set aside for minorities are to show that there are accomplishments, achievements, history, etc. outside of what we are taught and show regularly. The purpose isn't to bring division, but to show that everyone has a place. It's about inclusion, not exclusion. Saying that these "holidays" are useless takes away from the experiences of oppressed people, further oppressing them.
honestly men do things women can't or shouldn't do and women do things men can't or Shouldn't do. I actually think men have it harder now and days rather than women.
What we celebrate is for the history, but don't forget that we're also creating history right now. So yes. I think international Men's Day sounds awesome.

Try it with a w instead of a an e
Me too, @pokethebear, me too.
