The kings of couch co-op are undisputably Nintendo. Mario kart, party, Nintendo world, Smash/melee/brawl, plus they've added how many players you can have on a system.
Halo stopped, need for speed stopped, uncharted stopped.
Couple of the really good ones or ones that would be better with it cut it out/never included it :/
From what I know about Super Mario 3D World, splitting the screen into four would be really confusing. Not all games are two players

Sucks that we had split screen back when screens weren't nearly big enough for it, but now that most people own at least one big HDTV, split screen is dwindling.
Nintendo.
