A product of a public education that barely addresses geography. For me my geography education in school was "finished" by 7th grade. After that it was rarely touched upon and even then only in passing. I think the only thing I was taught less was grammar.
It would be more precise to say that I was taught the exact same grammar lessons every year until we moved onto literature. 4 years of learning little more than the preposition table did very little to prepare me for college English. I'd never even heard of diagramming a sentence until then and it was accepted that that was probably true for many students. I'd have to say I learned most of my grammar from just reading and learning a second language.
And then some people think Ukraine is an island off the U.S. coastline.
