Fucking idiots. Just get rid of your reproductive organs cus you really shouldn't have kids.
I'm not religious, not even close. However, I sympathize with religious people. Their faith is a reason to get up in the morning. It's why they built huge, beautiful churches and wrote hundreds of pages by hand. Faith should evolve as the centuries pass and our own knowledge of the world extends or it will sink into irrelevancy. Some people just refuse to change.
I'm late to this but I have to tell you that what you said right here shows more intellect, compassion, awareness and class than way too many adults that I know. You would make an amazing writer or speaker! I don't mean to call you out or embarrass you, I just wanted to tell you that. It was awesome.
Just because it looks pretty doesn't mean it's good. Everyone loves how a mushroom cloud looks but they never want to witness it. Faith is essentially knowing you're wrong but wishing you weren't.
@kurama_otsutsuki Faith is about sticking to your beliefs when you are faced with opposition. What I meant was that any force strong enough to produce so many wonderful things can't be all bad.
@mandyfr33gordon Oh, thanks!
@kurama_otsutsuki the reason I am so impressed by what she said is because
1. She's not religious, not even close. This indicates to me that she hasn't been programmed as so many of us are from young childhood. She's not labeling her beliefs, she simply knows what she knows. That's powerful.
2. She sympathizes with those who are religious. This is such a big thing, maybe the biggest thing that mankind needs in order to grow. The absence of acceptance is the cause of seemingly almost all of the bad things going on between humans. Wars, genocide, the Crusades, witchhunts, suicide and more.
3. She went further and showed that she wasn't just parroting pretty words by describing how she accepts and understands them. She not only sympathizes but empathises as well! (I may have spelled that wrong)
4. Then she talked about how humans need to be able to evolve their beliefs as our knowledge grows. Is that not wisdom?
Faith is about deny evidence because you don't like it and you are confusing the correlation with causation. Just because good things happened to exist alongside religion doesn't mean religion is the cause. You are trying to imply that beauty cannot exist without religion which is simply not true.
1.) It doesn't matter if she's religious or not. She is still spreading what is essentially terrorism in a nice package.
2.) Yes, the absence of acceptance can lead to war but religion causes this. Simply look at how religion views women, gays, and other religious people. Religion supports acceptance among only itself and hatred among everyone else.
3.) Who cares? She says she is sympathetic but what she supports show quite the opposite. You can't say you support murder while claiming to be peaceful.
4.) Human beliefs are evolving - by shrinking. The time of believing is leaving and the time of knowing is rising. The fact that we are having this conversation proves this.
Do I take offense? Not at all but you ARE talking as the opposition as you are supporting a person who supports hatred, misogyny, homophobia, rape, murder, and the list goes on. For everything supposedly good thing religion does, it can be traced back to terrible origins and hidden intentions.
Okay I don't see how we got this stuff this confused but I don't think you are understanding 3/4 of what my point was. It seems like you are focusing on one part only and that is that she is accepting of the religious people whom she knows, and that I, in turn, just supported her.
I abhor organized religion. It sickens me to think of all the abominations that have been carried out in the name of a character in a storybook. But in order to evolve, we must start learning how to understand one another. Or we will never get anywhere. If I have to be one of the ones to reach out first, I accept that. I will do everything I can to try and understand where people are coming from. I'll be supportive and accepting within reason. Am I going to hang around with judgemental zealots? No I will not. Terrorists? Hell no! But I'm still going to keep trying to have less hate and more acceptance. I'm not going to solve everything in this life obviously but I'm going to do what I can do for those who are ready to awaken.
I'm a bit shocked about how far you've taken my comment.
1. I never implied that beauty cannot exist outside of religion. I was just saying that it was extraordinary that something as vague as a few books could inspire people so much.
2. What the hell? Terrorism? All I said was that we should be more accepting towards others and not insult ALL religion. Anti-vaxers, ACTUAL terrorists, and other people that use religion to justify their hatred are obviously not the people I support. However, if you incorporate science and modern advancements into your faith, are respectful towards others, and are a decent person, you should be allowed to do what you want!
3. Again, not every religious person follows their sacred texts so strictly. Most of them are modernizing their beliefs to fit the modern times. I dislike those who nitpick for their own agenda, but that's a different argument.
4. Yes, religion doesn't have a good past, but almost nothing does.
3.) When the fundamentals of your religion encourage murder, hatred, and other shit then it is not the fault of the extremists - it is the fault of the religion.
4.) It's not just the past. It's the past, present, and foreseeable future that is terrible.
I'm aware a lot of the fundamentals do, but again, a lot of people don't practice like that! Those texts are extremely outdated.
My own motto is basically: if it doesn't harm anyone, do what you want.
So, obviously, I don't agree with a lot of religious people, but I do try to respect the ones who are actually ok.
What the fuck? I CLEARLY stated I don't support people who use their religion as a weapon. I just don't believe that we should lump all religious people together because there are good people who happen to believe in a god or gods.
Almost all ancient religions (Which are 99.9% of all religions) are evil and to support evil is to be evil. Even if you don't admit or know that it's evil it doesn't matter.
Now I gotta go onto real issues like deciding which greek god I'd like a blessing from. Poseidon's would be dope but Hades is just as cool. Of course there are others to consider so I'll be doing that now.
Wow! Ancient religions are evil! I never knew! Hooty-hoo, dumbass.
Humans have historically been a violent, malicious race. It's no secret we've burned people at the stake for being witches, tortured people, and sacrificed them in the name of a god or gods.
However, back then, that was fairly normal. Often, these were times of celebration and victory over a perceived threat. People would watch someone being guillotined for the same reason we watch gory movies, real crime documentaries, and ISIS beheadings on YouTube.
As time changes, poeple's idea of "normal" and "evil" changes. Religion should also change along with it and it (somewhat) has.
Those who adapt their faith and respect and love their fellow man should never be discriminated against. There are, of course, those who do not adapt and use their faith as an excuse to justify their own hatred. I completely understand that these people are evil and should be punished, but they are not ALL people.
I sincerely hope your last comment is sarcasm. The Greek pantheon (supposedly) committed some pretty terrible atrocities. Their followers did much the same. The fact that these gods aren't proven to exist makes the actions of their followers even more of a debatable subject.
That's honestly how I feel. I believe god gave us the knowledge and the smarts to make the medicine to help prevent/cure/treat illnesses. It's a domino effect imo.
or he could've, you know, not waited thousands of years for us to invent those while people were dying young painful deaths and just have not created those illnesses in the first place.
Nope, He works in mysterious ways, beyond the scope of mere mortals. Like ways that involve killing babies, or ways that make it seem like he doesn't really exist.
Point is, you can't reason with faith.
Smart-Me: Well, now there are two idiotic ideas. The first being the idea that prayer works and the other that modern science is a result of it. My respect for Louis fall down to the level of theists due to lack of providing a good argument.
Human-Me: Well, if it stops a kid from dying then do whatever it takes.
Fortunately, I only listen to Smart-Me as we do our best to repress Human-Me as much as possible.
Alright, I'm game. Let me go ahead, wind up and throw a huge rock at this hornets nest.
I find attributing advances in science and technology to that of miracles and answered prayers to be offensive and an insult to all of human intelligence and achievements. WE did it through hard won success.
I also find that speaking as such to frame it in those terms so they just might be able to grasp it is stooping to their level of ignorance and is a slippery slope that accomplishes nothing. It reinforces their belief, rather than engendering trust in science.
Yeah me too. The one that really gets me is athletes. There always saying shit like "I pray god will give me a good game." Like what, you just want to be a puppet?
While you are right to hold the sacred human form above all others, why is it so hard for you to reconcile science with a belief in God? Is it so hard to believe that there is a God who set all the parameters of our universe billions of years ago to allow our scientists to do what they do? God made the puzzle, it's up to us to figure it out, and every day we get that much closer.
So you're telling me that only an atheist can be scientific? I'm pretty sure all the religious scientists of the world would disagree. Also, if you're talking about the Judeo-Christian god, you ought to capitalize it. In that context, 'god' becomes 'God' because it is now a proper noun. Just a tidbit in case you ever talk about God in a college paper or something. Like, for real, I wasn't trying to be an asshole, I just thought you should know.
Certain sciences can allow theists but most cannot. Your religious beliefs in zoology mean shit. They don't interfere with your job. If your an astrophysicist then you may be able to do your job as long as you don't become like Newton - complacent with inconsistencies and just put god as an explanation. But things like paleontology cannot have your biases. Your biased opinion of the creation of the Earth will change how you view evidence and may bring you to inaccurate conclusions.
When you bring god into science then it is no longer a science. Everything you do will be seen through that lens. Dinosaur fossil? Made by the devil OR is only 4000 years old. Dark matter? Duh, it's god - now let's go eat dinner. People getting sick for unknown reasons and dying? Well, god works in mysterious ways. When you bring god into the science it is no longer science.
Some people have the ability to take off the lens of god which let's them do real science but those people are an exception and, by default, their word in controversial subjects are worth less due to the likelihood of them lying in some fashion. It'd be like asking an oil company about the dangers out climate change - they are too biased to give an accurate statement. Even if the said person isn't biased the likelihood that they are is too great to take them at their word.
That is a ridiculous statement. And I'm offended that you think all religious people are so stupid. Not all Christians deny evolution, you can be a Christian and not be a young Earther, and just because dark matter is an 'act of God'(I couldn't think of a better phrase) doesn't mean we shouldn't investigate and try to figure out how or why it exists. God created this universe with a set of rules, physical and chemical forces that influence how events transpire, and it's our job to figure out what those forces are and how they work. As for people getting sick, you're right, it is God working in mysterious ways, it is God presenting our Doctors with a puzzle that needs solving, sacrificing those that must be sacrificed so that the rest of us can be saved from such fates.
It is even MORE insulting that you think someone is a liar just because they believe in God. That's like calling someone greedy just because they're Jewish.
I don't think ALL religious people are stupid. I know MOST are. Those that have never been exposed to reality are ignorant but those who have been and still follow a religion are stupid. If you believe a magical sky fairy exists then that makes you an idiot. Nothing lowers my respect for a person like knowing they are a theist - I tell my mother that her belief in Christianity means I can never truly respect nor see her as an equal and I do the same with my sister.
Also I didn't say all religious people are stupid. Hell, I never even mentioned intelligence until you brought it up.
Not a single shred, a minuscule amount, of evidence points towards a god or any kind of supernatural. Nothing good has ever come out of religion that could not be done in a better way. Religion is a parasite on the human brain constantly filtering out reality and replacing it with sky fairies.
First of all, shame on you for talking to your mother and sister that way. Now, before I respond to that diatribe, were you raised catholic or baptist, because holy shit. Oh, yeah, and just because you're an atheist doesn't mean you have to be a dick about it.
I was raised baptist but quickly learned it was bullshit by the time I was nine. I didn't even know that other people didn't believe in god until four years later. I suppose being slapped by the-bastard-who-abused-my-mother's mother when I, for lack of a better term, called bullshit on the Bible. At the age of nine I found so many inconsistencies that it shocks me that older people cannot even see one. They were extremely simple ones that apologists could work around but as I was so young it was expected.
The truth hurts. I will never soften the truth to spare anyone's feelings.
Shame on me? Shame on them for attempting to indoctrinate innocent children. I can respect my mother a bit more than my sister as my mother seems to be an Atheistic Christian - an Christian who doesn't really believe in God or Jesus but says they do - while my sister denies evolution and other sciences. To be fair, she is only 15 and still has quite a bit of maturing to do.
Do I automatically hate Christians? Not at all - their default respect is lowered but it can be countered by other means such as usefulness. My first girlfriend was a Christian, we met at Church (I went because it was a temporary escape from the-bastard-who-abused-my-mother) and we dated for about a year or so.
In a completely opposite direction, I respect ISIS by default more than most Christians. At least ISIS actually follows their holy text. Not only do most religious people lose respect for being religious but also for not properly following said religion. If my daughter wanted to be a Muslim fine - and I'll treat her exactly as the Quran says she should be. I actually plan on teaching any children I find myself having to take care of about all religions - primarily, in the form they should be regarded, as bedtime stories.
The Bible is mostly bullshit, I'll give you that, but, I never said anything about softening the truth, but you can soften you delivery without compromising what the truth is. Penn Jillette is a great example of an atheist who isn't a complete dick about it. You could learn a thing or two about delivery.
I don't want to have to waste my time by adding a few nice words. It's like when my dad tried to nicely tell me my grandmother (His mother) died. Get to the fucking point. I already knew she was about to die and the fact you're crying and trying to tell me something verifies that, yes, she is dead. And then it was a whole bullshit mess because my sister got mad at me because I wasn't crying like she was and I had to admit that I didn't really care. I have no idea who the hell my grandmother was. My only real memories of her were drinking chocolate milk at her house when I was a around four years old. I didn't even know her middle name - so why should I waste my time crying for her?
That turned into a rant but the point still stands. I will never try to soften the facts and I dislike anyone who does.
No. I never said that. However, 1: balancing religion with scientific thought in other areas is incredibly difficult to do well. 2: religion is scientifically unsound, you cannot believe in religion while approaching it with a true scientific attitude.
Popcorn for three funsubstance crowns
Soft drink for two funsubstance crowns
Candy for one point five funsubstance crowns.
looks like i called it, folks
