Quite a lot of bit of it is just nostalgia though. Like, I just started watching courage the cowardly dog again and I'm having less than half the fun I had as a kid
Dude- when us old timers were kids the cartoons were drugs. They were literally just commercials for toys. He man and transformers were two shows that literally were only to sell toys. Transformers toys existed before the idea for a show even did. Many great cartoons have come out. Don’t blame cartoons and don’t try and say more kids are on drugs now then before since statistics show that drinking and smoking are way down with kids.
It's not that cartoons are no longer enjoyable (although it is true) its actually the lack of control of creativity the creators have with their shows. Blame the fucking FCC and television producers for ruining quality shows and ideas.
Cartoons today: deep and enjoyable stories that can be watched by kids and adults alike (Gravity Falls, Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Avatar: The Last Airbender...)
Cartoons back then: Literal toy commercials.

Sorry but please grow out of the nostalgia and open your eyes. Today's cartoons, while being in general the same quality as the old ones, contain some masterpieces that the old generation of cartoons simply doesn't have. Even the most popular old cartoons, some of which are listed in the comment section of this post, were mostly the same slapstick crap. And this is coming from someone who also grew up on older cartoons. You just gotta learn to see past the nostalgia.
I'd gladly take living today rather than in the 80s and 90s. You had to watch what was on. Now, everything is available. Want the classics? You can get it (and you don't need to stay up late to get it). Want more contemporary? That's available too. You can watch what you want, when you want. We're no longer tied to the schedule the networks dictate (unless it's for Game of Thrones, in which case we're all awake at 12 for those new episodes to hit).
But that was so much fun! Anticipating the cartoons, & then getting to watch them made them all the more enjoyable. I remember how quickly we would finish our homework & chores just to be on time for Voltron. Good times.
