Am I looking at a pile of bikes now considered trash? Or is there a reasonable way to explain this?

I think a lot of them went out of business, discarding the unused bikes

I really hope they didn't destroy them but let people take them.

I don’t know if the people there would even want them. Many of the bikes are in a state of disrepair from sitting in graveyards for so long. Plus, China has had a cultural shift from riding bikes to driving cars since the new middle class can now afford them. My guess is they’ll be scrapped for whatever money they can get. Sad!

Has anyone confirmed that China isn't already in the post apocalypse?

Considering the shortage of women, the over-crowding, the pollution, and the censorship... they're pretty much on it's doorstep at the very least

The pollution specifically is a much larger problem than most people who aren't Chinese dont realize. There are a lot of absolutely amazing things in China, but the pollution has gotten BAD. Like, India riverbed bad.

Indeed. It partially bothers me that they're advocating so hard to be allowed to continue that level of pollution. Like, yes, you're making the world worse for everyone, but I can only imagine the ramifications it's going to have on the Chinese themselves. :/ I remember reading once about how they forbid anyone from driving in China for 2 weeks before the Olympics to try and get rid of some of the smog? I know a large portion of the people who live there that can afford to, have air filtration systems in their apartments and wear masks when they go outside, but that's only going to get you so far.
