I've said it once and I'll say it again... Yeah gender isnt a social construct. There are some stereotypes that are, (like only boys are supposed to like cars), but while my 2 year old daughter loves toy cars and trucks I'm not going to take that behavior and assume shes transgender because that's insane and if I tried pushing her in any direction based off those assumptions that would make me a bad parent. All due respect, a child doesn't know squat about themselves or the world and that's fine because they're a child.
Gender is a social construct, but I think your conflating transgender with gender. That's why blue is generally considered for boys, and pink is generally considered for girls. Transgender is a medical and psychological term that can, but not always, manifest itself very early in a person's life.

So you're saying that, even though I'm a Male who cant physically give birth to a child, that my biological gender is a social construct? Thats a load of crap. I'm also not conflating gender with transgender, my original comment was directed towards gender stereotypes and their effects on children.
No. I didn't say that. Biological gender and biological sex are often conflated and used interchangeably. Gender, as it is understood in a social sense, is a construct.
Relax. This isn’t a philosophical debate. Use some sources. @pripyatplatypus is saying that BY DEFINITION gender IS a social construct. @johnnyjohnny- your biological gender is correctly referred to as “sex.” You biological sex and your gender are defined as two different things. A long ass time ago someone decided on “man” and “woman” or some linguistic equivalent. But we could all as easily be “autobots” and “deceptions” or “Fredgurs” and “Glorks,” or there could be 3,4,8 genders. It just so happened that we decided that biological sex characteristics should be related to the role or identity of a person and so generally it is assumed that one who is biologically male will identify with a masculin gender. We also assumed that a person would follow heterosexuality based on gender, but those things aren’t a given. So the idea of “gender” is based in cultural conceptions of what a given biological sex is. But even amongst Herero sexual people who identify as the gender associated....
... with their biological sex, there are those who don’t conform to their traditional gender roles. “Metro sexuals” or the above mentioned “girls who play with trucks” for example. Biological sex tells you something about a persons genetics and or possibly the sec organs or hormone levels they were born with. What does gender tell you? If they say they are a “man” do they want sex with women? Like sports? Are they hairy? Big and muscular? Gender, and especially binary gender, exist to help quickly identify things about a person, however gender roles are becoming less rigid and less helpful in making any sort of assumption about a person. So what purpose do they serve?

It’s not an attack on traditional values or some new age quackery. It’s the literal definition of the word. It’s what it means regardless of what you think or want it to mean. Sex is biological, gender is social.
How are they gonna keep the biological sex secret?? Gonna glue a tape on their groin??
And if this is a good approach?
Then the kids should also not be taught that the Earth is a globe.. then should get to choose between Flat and Global models of Earth..
The kids should also be raised Agnostic..
They should get to decide if God is better or Satan is..(and we know who sounds more inviting)
Nonsense
They didn’t say biological sex was the point. They said gender was the point. It actually might be easier to hide biological sex than gender- hiding biological sex requires less effort as gender and gender roles are social constructs and the only way to shield a child from ideas that impart gender roles is by isolating them from society. Since it’s lunacy to even consider isolating a child from society completely enough to avoid imprinting some socially projected ideas of gender on them- it’s likely this idea won’t go well, but simply because it requires the parents to teach their children that everyone except them is wrong, and shield them from most any contact with the world.
True that. Sorry. I misspoke. It says they are trying to hide biological sex in order to shield them from gender stereotypes. What I meant was that the biological sex part is irrelevant. Everything else still stands. I will re edit the original post so that it reads correctly, but leave this comment to preserve the thread and the fact that I did in fact say: “they didn’t say biological sex” when what I meant was that hiding the biological sex wasn’t the point but the mechanism. The post was supposed to mean that hiding the biological sex from the children may even be easier than hiding their socially assumed gender roles, and that tying to hide the biological sex is pointless and ultimately harmful to the child and it’s abikity to interact and exist in society.
Keeping their sex a secret is not going to work, that’s irresponsible as hell.
I don’t mind raising a kid with whatever pronouns they want, dress how they want given it’s weather appropriate and safe, and letting them call themselves what they want. It just don’t matter if it doesn’t do lasting harm. I’m not about to put a kid on hormones they don’t need. For a long time I had masculine interests wanted to be a boy. That changed, and I’m sure I’m a girl now. It wouldn’t have been bad to let me call myself Alex or something, because it has about the same weight as a nickname if it’s not legal. I wore boys clothes because kids aren’t very different so it didn’t matter. No one cared. Now I wear whatever I want, skirts and feminine stuff included. Don’t force your kid to be trans, but let them do whatever as long as it’s safe and manageable.
That would be great, but society knows gender stereotypes and to shelter them would be near impossible. But parents can raise the kids with values that say that gender stereotypes don't matter and how to be smart about them,
