I think you can take it to a bank and as long as it's real they'll exchange it for you

I learned in class once that as long as you have 50+% of the bill then it’s still considered legal tender and you can use it

I heard at least 75% of a bill, that way you can't just rip one in half and get two new ones.

It’s actually 51% for that reason

But 1% is such a fine margin how can anyone tell?

Tape? I've literally never had a bill turned down for being taped but idk if America has issues about that

No, tape is fine in the US as well

Why would you even rip a letter open that far down? You’d tear up whatever’s inside anyway

As long as more than half of the bill is intact, you're fine

As long as you have over half of the bill in possession, a good bank will trade for a whole bill. However, they can say no, and they require over half so they don’t pay out twice for the same bill. This situation is not a big deal.

Cashier here; We can't accept torn bills if the little code thing is torn as well. You will have to take that to the bank.

You can just tape it, I've never had a taped bill be declined.

Actual bank teller here: both serial numbers have to be fully intact for us to exchange it. It can be ripped, even cross shredded (that was fun to piece back together), taped, but as long as we have two full matching serial numbers, we can give you a "good" bill.

So they pay you to not go to the party?
