This is kind of a complex subject. On one hand you have businesses that want nothing to do with chip and pin as it is more complex, has to be paid for to be installed and has a lot more software glitches in the payment system. On the other hand you have point of sale software companies that are really slow to program for this type of payment. On another note you have point of sale resellers that are not up to par with the new software and are really slow at implementing the new software.

I just learned that if anyone capitalizes "GOT," I ignore all context and assume they're talking about Game of Thrones. I've never even seen one episode..

My stepfather helped program the chips, and he told me the government gave them an unobtainable deadline to complete the project. The chips didn’t work at first. This is why businesses are not yet forced to use chip readers. Now you know.

Wow, the US doesn't have contactless payment yet?

I just googled because I thought surely this is a mistake, and yep they don't have contactless or at least not as widespread as other countries and in fact even chip and pin is more advanced than it gets in America. That's what this meme is referring to. I initially though swipe must mean contactless but nope it means the old fashioned swipe and sign the receipt method.

Wait, the "old fashioned"? Like, carbon copy and sign the slip old fashioned?

Not sure about the carbon copy bit but from what I can gather you have to sign, I imagine like it used to be in the UK where you hand your card to the cashier, the till prints a receipt, customer signs it, the cashier checks the signature compared to the back of the card and keeps that copy and presses ok and it prints another receipt for the customer.

Well, I hear nineties culture is popular again.

Most places won’t make you sign, nor will they check your signature.

What? So what security is in place to stop someone stealing a card and just going on a spending spree?

Uhhh not much.

Eventually the entire country will be EMV enabled as it is the most secure way to process credit cards. Each transaction creates a unique pin code strictly for that transaction that cannot be reused for subsequent transactions using the same credit card. Even if the pin code is illegally retrieved along with the credit card number, it is worthless.

Ever since the chip came out in Canada, followed by tap, I have not had to swipe the old fashion way in years! Weird how America has not caught up, guess it's because the country is so big.

Just ask when you pull out your card, "Chip?" They'll know what you're talking about.

What makes the chip so much better than swiping? Is it just security?

Yes.

Hmm. What was the security flaw with swiping?

“Traditional magnetic stripe cards require a signature for security purposes. A Chip Card adds an additional layer of sophisticated fraud protection through an embedded microchip that turns cardmember information into a unique code when used at a chip-enabled terminal that is difficult to duplicate or copy.”

Lol, at least put in some effort, guest. The sweet spot is when you post a comment so crazy it makes the reader question their own sanity, Ken M-style.
