Indentured servitude was also a thing. Also prison work teams. Also for a long time natives were counted as neither citizens nor people and not only was it legal to kill us you could make legally refuse to pay us for anything because we were (as stated above) neither citizens nor people.
It actually isn't. Even prisoners get paid in the US for taking on basic cleaning/laundry/kitchen duties. It's shit pay, but it's pay.

BUT the federal employees who worked will get paid, etc. The contractors are just sol and that’s a huge workforce who will get nothing. There’s a union trying to change that, but for now, it’s just the same as it’s been. There’s no accommodation, no help, just uncertainty and enforced unemployment when they’re trying to serve their country too.
