Unfortunately cause Paris is so much of a tourist spot it's kind of spoiled, you have to go out into the country around Agen, Provence etc. if you really want to experience some of the beauty France has. That's from my experience anyway, I'm sure Paris has little places that are just as nice but hidden away.
I was recently in Paris and the surrounding countryside. My favorite spot in paris was alittle cafe near the seine just down the way from Notre Dame. The bells were ringing and we just drank and ate cheese. We went to some villages too Pierrefonds was incredible we stayed in a place called Apremont near Chantilly.
"we just drank and ate cheese" you can't get anymore French than that. Sounds so picturesque, unfortunately I was sick in most of France so I couldn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to but it's definitely the little secret cafes and places that make it beautiful.

Never expect a popular tourist spot to be clean and beautiful, no matter how much the country tries, it's going to be dirty and overcrowded. You want to see beauty of the place? Go to the places that are not popular. I completely agree with @parisqueen.
The problem doesn't even come from the tourists, even the non-touristic parts are dirty as fuck. There's just too much people, convinced they don't have enough time to do anything even saying sorry when they step on your foot. Same goes for my hometown Brest, it's dirty and people are bitches. But yeah a lot of other cities are nice. I especially love the eastern part (Nancy, Strasbourg, Colmar...) and in Brittany Quimper (where I currently live) is really cute, civilised, nice and pretty.
Yeah, I'm in Paris every now and then and it's basically a shithole. People tend to scream at each in the streets other over nothing, it's horribly dirty and yet horribly overprized.
But there are so many beautiful spots in France: Arcachon, Cognac, Dûne du Pilat, the cost of Brittany and Normandie to start with...
