That's depending on how you define being religious. Religion as such doesn't necessarily mean praying and reading the same book all over again, but has many different forms that are basically engraved in our brains.
A very interesting article once stated, that religion revolves around an object of devotion, shared suffering and finally, salvation. Considering these factors, sports fans for example are to be counted as very religious people. They come together every sunday in their temple, singing songs and praising their heroes. A close game is the equivalent to the lord's passion and salvation is experienced in the final goal/touchdown/run that turns the hole thing into a victory.
Car-addicted guys washing their object of devotion every saturday for hours can be seen as religious act.
Religiousness (is that a word?) thus lies in all of us, it is just expressed in different ways for different reasons.
As long as it is revolving about human behaviour, it's always complex and divers. And I hope you know that science papers are funded by someone, which makes them dependant and opens gates for influence (e.g. "you have to drink 2 litres of water per day to stay healthy")
Furthermore I never said it was and the main idea behind this approach is to think of religion in a different way than just what is preached by institutions that shouldn't exist as per their own beliefs.
My brother-in-law and sister are like that... Cue to my then5yo niece exclaiming loudly "at least we know who the fucktards are" when she saw people entering a cathedral in my town. I apologized to the people and just explained her that believing does not make you stupid or worthless, you can believe or not but not attack other people based on that. She then brought it up to her parents, my b-i-l now hates me even more than he used to but my sister (even though she still thinks religion is stupid and should be banished) acts more tolerant towards religious people and thus my niece is more respectful too.
But I felt my heart drop when I heard her say that, as she is usually just a charming girl, very nice and compassionate.
Many atheists believe there is no god for the same reason that many theist believe there is one: that is what they were taught. There is no logical process, it requires absolutely no intelligence to do.
I just wanted to know mainly because that was the stupidest sentence I have read in a while. You know you are very smart Sherlock. Of course we are thought shit, we don't get divine revelations. Your statement is wrong on so many levels I can't even begin to talk about it. If I teach you 2+2=5, do you accept that? There is ko logical process. You are not intelligent
This isn't something to argue about, of course people who believe in religions are stupid. Not in general but wrt this particular matter. It's just a rational notion, it doesn't have any room for argument
For the record, I don't think atheists are unintelligent: Only that it does not require intelligence to be an atheist.
I apologize if that was not clear.
"Of course people who believe in religions are stupid" yeah clearly you are way smarter than Darwin or Marie Curie.
It shouldn't indeed be something to argue about yet here we are...
I'm atheist and I know I'm not the smartest person out there. My entire family is Christian and tried to raise me to be the same way, but I didnt agree with what I was learning in church and I didnt like how gossipy our church community was so I started going to church less and less and eventually stopped going all together
Be being atheist isn't about intelligence, it's about a choice and I chose to stop believing in something I didnt agree with

Even if it was, it's the sort of subject that is reserched observationally and observational studies are problematic
