What does “spending time online” even mean in 2019? Get in the car- a good percentage of People are online at that point through the car, streaming music, GPS, etc. get to work- a good percentage of people will spend most of their day using email, slack, jabber, google docs, box, salesforce, taskus, etc. or POS terminals, order pads, etc. odds are your personal texts and phone are through wireless internet. Your desk phone has good odds to be too. You probably aren’t watching tv or physical media when you get home or have time either- you’re streaming or on YouTube. You might order dinner through door dash or via your internet band phone- maybe get groceries online?
Your oven, fridge, food scale, even your cooking utensils and gadgets may be online. Your bathroom scale, home thermostat, tv, doorbell, vacuum, watch, alarm clock, home security system, lawn mower, even your pets might be tagged with internet technology or fed by it, tracked by it, monitored by it. Your baby, it’s monitor, toys, etc etc.
In 1999 the term “online” had pretty clear meaning. But- it’s 2019. The internet isn’t for tech nerds or governments or major companies. It’s not for tinkerers or cutting edge money makers. Some freaking toilets are networked now. The internet touches almost every aspect of our lives and does so often without us noticing or thinking about it. Students might learn and play online at school, research and hand in assignments online, collaborate in groups online, even take while classes online with money earned online. Businesses are ran largely or sometimes entirely online with no physical presence besides the humans behind the screen. People get married online, have funerals online, have sex online. We haven’t quite gotten to having live human babies online but the theoretical possibility exists. So my big question is- what the hell does “90 minutes online” even mean?
