Yes but you can't just walk up buy it and walk out it's actually kind of hard to buy one. And they can't take them out to show you. They show you pictures. The guns are hunting guns and Target shooting guns. Not really the kind of guns you use to carry around or kill with. Though they could kill someone. But really they are like any product you get at Walmart. Not really high quality but good enough to get the job done.
It's like buying a TV at the grocery store.
I have an old magazine from 1960 with an ad selling .380 Browning automatic pistols by mail for $19.95 Of course you had to include a signed statement that you were over 21, never convicted of violent crime, not under indictment or a fugitive. Cause you can't be too careful!
Selling guns in Walmart: yes. But- you have to understand that in America we don’t have a lot of “grocery stores” and Walmart isn’t one. Our “grocery stores” especially chains like Walmart or Target tend to be “all in one” stores. You can buy Motor oil, tires, car batteries; toys for your kids, groceries, medicine including prescriptions from a doctor, tents or camping gear, furniture, clothing, a TV, a Bicycle, a swimming pool, many have restaurants AND a deli, and some even sell caskets for funerals and motorcycles or cars.
Smaller more grocery specific stores still often have florists, toys, outdoor furniture, home decor and supplies, pharmacies, movie rentals, banks, seasonal wear like swim suits and shoes, athletic equipment and more. In fact- except where you know somethings are better prices at different stores or where there’s a certain brand one store doesn’t carry- you can more or less do all your shopping at a single store if you wanted and never have to shop or go anywhere else.
Guns are sold mainly for hunting, sporting, or outdoor activities at these places as part of the sports or outdoors section. But it also depends on where you live. In more urban areas where hunting and camping aren’t as common you don’t usually find guns at a place like Walmart except for MAYBE BB or paint ball guns. They also often sell bows and cross bows as well as knives- because these are all common items for outdoors or sporting activities and American stores except boutiques and malls tend to be “one stop shopping.”
TL:DR or in summation: Modern American stores are like shopping malls or plazas all under one roof. The goal is to have ANYTHING you’d want to buy in one place and EVERYTHING that you might buy as a related purchase available. They sell meat and the grill to cook it on, and the gas or charcoal for the grill. They sell the tent and the supplies for your hunting trip and the guns and ammo you’d use to hunt with- many tiles even a 4 wheeler and everything to maintain it too.
there's an old joke that involves this. Something along the lines of a new employee at a store getting a 10,000+ dollar sale and his explanation for it basically being that a dude came in for tampons for his girlfriend and the salesman being like "wells shit might as well go fishing, here look at this really nice fishing pole but youll also
need... ... and finally youll need a boat to go out on the lake in here look at this model"
lol. I do recall a joke to that effect. It’s true though. Most people, and many comedians muse about going to the store for a couple things but always ending up with $200 or more in purchases by the time they leave.
