Honestly, my parents, extended family, some teachers, and a few NCOs have suggested I might be on the spectrum, but I refuse to actually see a professional just because 1) I function well enough in the environment I want to be in, 2) I don't need the stigma attached to me, and 3) I don't need or want special treatment.
That 16th century bit really got me on a spiritual level, I have similar thoughts about the 18th and 19th centuries. Still a lot of civilization, but every opportunity to just fuck off into the frontier and not have to deal with society or people's bullshit.
No reason you can’t still do it. Most every US state has areas that are rural to the level of being almost frontier-like. Subsistence farming and herding is still a viable way to live. Just pick a climate that you like and do it to it.
A girl in my class is in the same situation. To her, the word is so negative that she was shocked it could be applied to her, which adds to the matter. Your reaction is totally understandable, this type of stigma is a bit heavy (though I think you get used to it after a while? I've struggled for a long time with being gifted, it does have a more positive tone in today's society but a lot of people have used it in the past to put me in the "abnormal" category in their brains. Now it's ok, but I can't say it was simple).
It's really cool if you have that Idaho opportunity!
Families in the not to distant past would lock up the "crazy" family members in the attic. Both sides of my family have stories of family members being lock away ....
I read an article once that speculated many of the shamen or holy men of tribal cultures - the odd people, who didn't quite fit in - were possibly on the spectrum.
Imagine as a time traveler, going back and setting a secret society of doctors & open minded clerics to be called upon when "changeling" children were found. Then take these kids to a place where autism was understood at least better than 16th cent people.
Nice quiet houses, open farms, lots and lots if books. Everyone brought is taught to read and as much about ASD as possible to carry one the work when travellers leave. But first, travelers give maps of all great wars & natural disasters, conflicts and says "avoid these."
They end up founding some place like Maine, telling stories of horror & darkness to keep the "normies" out. In actuality, undersea bullet train to new Atlantis, cold fusion power, and lightbulb that emit anti-noise to make quiet. Still taking in special people who dont have social media accounts &making science.
Working on it, got Stephen King working on the anti-tourism campaign. Elon is tackling the light bulb and we're expanding it to street lighting. I'm working on the trans-dimensional dream machine to collaborate & share ideas with the others in the rest of the multiverse.
No just no. Autism has been linked to environmental factors such as pollution. Mothers who live by a freeway when they are pregnant are more likely to have an autistic baby
Of course, it's never as simple as all that. Some research has indicated a link between environmental toxins and development of autism - but the relationship is not yet clearly defined and it's unclear how exposure to pollutants interacts with other risk factors like genetics.
*Rumbles*
