@cryoenthusiast- in general when speaking of members of that service branch each force:
Army: Soldier
Marines: Marine
Navy: Sailor
Airforce: Arimen
Coast Guard: technically they’re called “Coast Gaurdsman” but “Coastie” is common as are some less.... polite nicknames. And of course- there are many informal names used in various branches for other branches or certain specialties etc. but in general- these are the “official” designations you’d respectfully use to address a member of each service.
Ooh. It does have a ring to it. And in the search for names they do specify they are looking for something that has a “futuristic” sound- so I think that’s solid.
As confusing as it might be given we have the “Army Rangers” I might go with “Ranger” or some variant like “Space Ranger, Star Ranger, Exo-Ranger etc. likewise and possibly with some word added in front I also might use:
- <Exo> Trooper(s)
- <Exo>-specialist
Now- astronaut and cosmonaut- the root of “naut” is Greek for sailor. Star sailor basically. We probably don’t want to call them sailors- it makes sense but the navy already has sailors and the space force is currently branched from the airforce. So “Sailor” or some version might be problematic even if it is apt. But some version of “naut” might work.
Of course... it remains questionable what if any activities this force might play part in- especially as there are treaties on the use of weapons and warfare in space- and it is far less likely with current technology that we would be sending amy number of actual humans into space even for combat- instead more likely that the space force would be in trailers somewhere controlling or monitoring machines via remote computer terminal. So much less “Aliens Space Marines” or “Starship Troopers” and more.. World of Warcraft or like playing EVE online. So perhaps we call them “guildies” or something to reflect the fact the job is likely to be more that of an MMO player than a space commando?
Either way- don’t be surprised if in the not so distant future the government is recruiting top soldiers from Blizzard tournaments and twitch- and having the US team win over China in E sports isn’t just some mater of geek pride, but is a serious national security issue.
Settle international incidents with Full Immersion R6 Siege Matches. Build bodysuits and brain scanners for DEVGRU to assault Alfa Operators, then vice versa. Then both units are kept sharp for operating against criminals, terrorists, pirates, and other non-state actors in real space.
I like the sound of that. Both ideas. If they could either create a decent replica of space fighting on earth for not a zillion dollars and short durations- or like you say- go full virtual- that would be cool. And virtual battles for raining and also for resolution of certain international disputes would be a huge saver of money and suffering plus a great way as you say to train and keep troops sharp.
I could also see using the spaceforce as a DARPA extension- they’ll have a budget but space wars are a ways a way beyond things like satellite tampering, espionage, and MAYBE mass drivers or other weapons/defense platforms. So using their budget surplus for R&D and their primary purpose as a well funded development and testing arm... the same technologies for instance that would be developed for their VR works have practical applications and could be used by other branches for everything from training to advanced interfaces and robotics/drones to cyber warfare and uses like camouflage and misdirection.
Also I think “Void Watchers” sounds cool. The void part is- well- void. Bad ass. Watchers has a sense of purpose and drives home that the eye in the sky sees all. I also liked “Orbitmen,” it sounds less tactical but has a solid ring I think. That one was from cryoenthusiast. That’s the tough part for me- more “Star Trek” “military NASA” or more SOCOM bad ass? I just hope they don’t go with something lame.
That’s what I want to hear. I’m glad there’s a good man on the job and can’t wait to see what “proper” names they receive regardless of their official designation in the Space Force.
It depends! For a spacewalk that can be up to like ten hours, absolutely a high tech kind of diaper. For chillin in a space station, i think they just use their toilet
You gotta be smart to be a professional intelligence or tech guy. It's literally rocket science.
As for the uniforms, why are people shitting on them? They're already available, OCP is cheap to procure and effective in most environments, and most of the fuckers are going to be grounded anyways. Why fix what ain't broke?
I agree, I’m not paying extra taxes just so they can look snazzy. I imagine their dress blues or whatever version of formal wear they go with will be nice enough anyway.
Explorers?
Guardians of the Endless Black?
Crayon Eater.
Seamen.
Chairmen.
