I wouldn't be able to kill it either, even if it's for the best but I don't know if he's even bothered. This is why I would love to do entomology along with my degree.
Everytime I hear about the parasites and shit that do this to their hosts I feel so horrible for the host. Even if it is just a bug. What a terrible way to die

Also I think a bird picked it empty and its nerve node wasn't damaged so that's how it can keep on walking? It also couldn't operate the hind legs anymore.
Idk for sure. My first thought was jewel wasps which lay an egg and then the baby eats the wasp alive from the inside. But I don't think those things are in your part of the world. Could be some other form of parasite or fungus. I really, really don't the cockroach itself is still live anymore
