So I'm all for more individual space on an airplane but I also know that airplane seats are very specifically designed. In the case of a crash their design has been proven to help increase your chance of survival. Mythbusters even did an episode about this and came to the conclusion that the way they're designed does help significantly even if you won't be injury free. So with that in mind I'd be happy for any change in the seats that accomplishes the same thing and gives me better separation from the people beside me.
Hello, person working on aircraft seating for 15 years now.I hate to ruin this, but it's not gonna happen soon, as testing, certification and construction of those is significantly more expensive and the seats are heavier this way.
As far as the myth busters thing goes: the usual plane crash end in a huge fireball. No seat is ever gonna safe your life.
That's the conclusion they came up with too. But in the off chance it doesn't end in a flaming ball of destruction they give you a better chance than other seats would. Certain death vs almost certain death.
The virus is airborne and can hang in the air for hours. Without some way to isolate an individual's air supply, it's like trying to designate a part of a toilet bowl as a piss-free zone.
Thirsty, sir? The drinking water is on the left. Enjoy your flight.
Well, this seat design has nothing to see with Covid. There are first and business class seats facing backwards already flying, e.g. British Airways A380. And you are right, aircrafts are the best breeders for infections.
Noted, and as far as airlines being a hot spot for respiratory infections, a big part of that is the bone dry air that they are constantly recirculating to save fuel costs. It's a lot cheaper than having to constantly heat and humidify the minus 40 degree outside fresh air, that a proper air exchange system would require.
Funny enough, the circulated air is humidified by the breath and sweat of passengers, which condenses in A/C tubes. Still, the air won't get past 3% humidity, which is less than anywhere in the world
