As a sub I never did this though I have seen others do it.
And I been a sub a few times where I was there for a month or 2. One job I had for 3 months due to the regular teacher was on maternity leave.
What I do is tell the kids real fast what I can and if they had homework or not.
What I did hate was the kids who thought that because the bell was going to ring in 10-5 minutes it was a good time to pack there stuff and stand by the door.
I literally had one kid tell me to mind my own business when the bell rings he is free to go!
I told him well from bell to be here till bell to leave your business is my business! So either sit back down or you can take a seat in the vise principal’s office it is your choice!
He sat down and I told him now you stand up again like that and I won’t warn you I will just hand you the note to the office.
He thought I was bluffing and next day sure enough guy stood up by the door while I was reading to the class. It was 5 minutes till the bell.
I was ready for him I filled one out before class started. I filled in the time and stuck it out to him with out stopping what I was reading to the class or saying a word to him!
He said WHAT!!
I shook the note at him still not talking to him.
He took the note and read it than stormed out.
I locked the door behind him. And stood by the door while I finished. The bell rang and to the rest of the class I told them no homework for being good and let them go.
I made the kid write an essay over what I read in class and marked it as his homework the next class.
He never stood by the door again.
Well.... yes. That is correct. But I don’t think you understand what that means- and I think you REALLY need to spend as much time learning as you can based on this statement. The bell does not decide when class starts. It is a signal to let you know that class has begun. The teacher may at their discretion start class at any time and end at at any time within certain confines before or after the bell rings.
Young Cole, if I may call the kid in the picture Cole as I would expect such entitlement and righteous ignorance from a Cole or an Ethan or such- Young Cole- does not not understand there is something called “duty of care.” While on school grounds of a teacher is present- after school, before school, it doesn’t matter. If you are on school grounds as a student and they are a teacher there- you are in their care. They have the legal rights and duty of guardianship.
If you hurt yourself in class before the bell rings- the teacher is liable. You were on school property, left in the care of the school by your parents- a transfer that occurred to moment you stepped on the property and your parents weren’t there but a member of the school faculty was. Likewise- teachers have powers to the extent of law to detain students, enforce discipline, eject students, confiscate property, and other actions deemed prudent and legal in their capacity of guardianship while a minor is on school property without their legal guardian of record.
Tl:dr- this statement shows an utter lack of understanding. Duh. The bell does not start class- the teacher does. The bell is a signal to them and you so you are aware that a block of time has started or ended. While a student is on school grounds and a teacher is present but not a parent- the teacher has legal duty of care- responsibilities but also powers over you like a parent but with constraints by law. Show me a law that says the school bell has any authority over a child. It does not. It’s a bell. Your teacher decides when a lesson starts and when it ends- and generally they cooperate with other teachers and the principal/district on guidelines for that.
