In 1508, Ponce de Leon established the first settlement near present-day San Juan and began enslaving the indigenous Tainos. In 1513, to supplement the dwindling Tainos population, the first enslaved African people were imported to Puerto Rico.

If I was arguing semantics, I’d note that the origin of the word slave comes from Slav, as in slavic, as in part of my ancestry, and many other white people, as the Slavs were in a prime geographic location, what with the lack of large civilizations and easy water access. However, black slaves were the result of tribal African warfare rather than Slavic captures, so that just puts me as basically the same boat as blacks, due to the fact that Slavs were typically enslaved by white people and middle easterners.
