Well... how about we fund and listen to the scientists in reguards to Thorium reactors? They are safer and can scale smaller than "conventional" Uranium plants do.

We only went with Uranium plants because they also supported the cold war arms race and Thorium research stagnated.

We still need Plutonium for RTGs though.

Just because it won't explode easily doesn't make it safe. We don't have a plan for the waste that will take 30,000 years to be safe.

It seems to be the most feasible option (at least for now) to generate energy on our first Mars colony!!
