In all likelihood, this was due to the calculation determining that swerving out of the way or slamming on the breaks was more likely to cause a significant, multicar accident.

Either that or the obstacle was detected but then classified as not relevant due to a lack of similar cases in the learning database (like that time a smart car saw a woman pushing her bike across the road, but as it hadn't learn to recognize that situation it didn't redeem it as being a human at all and killed her).
