It probably had rabies it’s rare to see them with it so it can really freak people out to see how they act when they do.
My uncle had to put down a small herd of deer in my home town because they showed signs of being rabid.
He works for the town as a low maintenance man. He cleans the streets and gets rid of road kill. They asked him to help because they knew he hunted.
He said he saw one that looked like it was a zombie because half it’s face was gone and he could see the bone and it’s antler was hanging broken.
Some tried to ran at them as they shot them one ran straight at them and turned and slammed into a brick fence. It did it over and over till my uncle walked over and put it out it’s misery. All the deer tested positive for rabies. There was about 8 of them.
My uncle said they think the deer was attacked by some animal that had rabies and they spread it though out them from shared food.
Could have been chronic wasting disease (CWD). It primarily affects deer, elk, moose, reindeer. It is a prion, like mad cow disease (BSE, bovine spongiform encephalopathy), or Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
These diseases are really weird. They aren’t really viruses or bacteria but the cause proteins in brain tissue to fold improperly.
But, they cause loss of motor function and processing. Lots of accounts of affected animals doing really weird stuff as their brain degenerates. Salivation is also a symptom of CWD, so that could account for it being weird with its tongue.
Wait is that the one were people will turn to cannibalism? Like that one woman who was eating a man's face when police arrived and could only be stopped by several bullets? Oh wait no, I think that was a drug.
Yeah, it's not easily transmitted. You need to eat venison to get CWD, and as long as you stick to muscle tissue, you should be fine. As for rabies, you need to be bitten by a rabid animal to get it, and it is quite treatable if caught quickly.
Actually, with a little more research, I see that there have not been any cases of CWD in humans. So I guess it is speculation that it could be transmissible like Mad cow, if you’re eating the brain tissue.
Pretty sure the face-eating incident is drug related.
Far worse... what if humans could transmit to wildlife. (Deer coughing at edge of herd... "stay back, I've contracted humanity. Save yourselves" ... stands on hind legs and begins running for political office. Other deer look on in horror before bolting away. One turns back briefly "my God, the humanity...").

But in seriousness, it hasn’t been transmitted to humans, but it could be.
