The word romjul comes from the Norse rúmheilagr meaning "which does not have to be kept strictly holy"

And what I call my entire year of sinning

My language, Dutch, doesn't have a word for that, but we do have a "second Christmas day", an "old year's day", and of course, a "new year's day".

Cool, I haven't heard of "old year's day" before, what or when is that?

It's not an official holiday, but it's what we call the 31st of december.

Sweden has "mellandagarna", meaning "the inbetween days". It's a time for working, partying, going on holiday, planning new years party, resting up after Xmas and eating leftovers. Oh, and there's a big sale of stuff that didn't sell for Xmas.

That's similar to the other word we use: Mellomjul, and we have pretty much the same activities I see

I prefer romjul. Bring out the rum!

@anthracite, second Christmas day (2e Kerstdag) is what some countries call Boxing Day. Old year’s day (Oudjaar, Oudejaarsdag, Oudjaarsavond) is New Year’s Eve.

Oh nice, some linguistics in the mix too, I love it

Glad to hear! I must admit that I deleted it at first as I didn’t want to sound condescending. Nothing but respect for @anthracite!

In Sweden we do also have dipping day (Xmas Eve). And hence we have the day before dipping day. And, yes you guessed it, the day before the day before the dipping day. I am not making this up.

The day before the day before the day, happens here too, but we don't have dipping day though

When I was a kid, I thought the «rom» in romjul meant «rom» as in outer space. I was so confused why we called it Outer-space-christmas, but figured it had something to do with the bethlehem star

It makes sense though, sort of
