even if they really spent 300 dollars on it, its been making acceptable quality toast for 50 years, that's definitely not a waste of money.

I still use my mum's toaster from 1980. It's not as fancy though. Actually pretty ugly but i refuse to buy a new one as long as it still works but it just won't die haha
