It does depend a bit on the species. There's species of vipers etc that have knotched scales that are quite hard and spiky
`
And then there's snakes that have been bred to be born without scales at all
`
In general snakes you'd typically have access to in the pet trade and in North america/europe are going to have a texture similar to this guy though. They're honestly usually quite fragile and it's easy to break their ribs
`
Snakes are also heat sensitive, and often times they'll react to your touch at the spot you touch them haha
aww, i never touched one whenever i was given the opportunity because i was scared of a ton of things as a kid (during trips to zoos and stuff, when we were permitted to touch). (tbh i was slightly more scared of germs from touching a live animal than the snake itself LMAO)
if i get another opportunity to, i'll pet a snek.
If you know someone who has a good tempered ball-python (or most other breeds of constrictors) they're often a good place to start
`
Most ball pythons are extremely docile.
`
Things to remember (this is to avoid stressing the snake, not for your own protection btw):
1) don't grab them from the top
2) try not to touch their heads
3) don't move fast
4) always pet in the DIRECTION of the scales (away from the head, toward the scales)
5) if you're holding the snake, make sure it's body is supported
6) wash your hands before and after touching the snake. This is for both you and the animals' protection :) (though I have forgotten to wash mine after from time to time... but generally speaking it's a good idea haha)
`
Final note:
Their bellies feel different from the scales on the rest of their bodies and are even softer and smoother - almost silk like in texture
(hopefully this doesn't freak you out - I tried to pick something without a head in it)
