That vastly depends on the fan fictions. A lot of them are churned out on the same patterns. But indeed, there are truly original ones that no one would publish. They talk directly with the readers and take suggestions into account -sometimes coauthoring a story with someone who put a good comment.
And since anxiety’s on the rise and staying in a known setting can bring a sense of comfort, maybe it also explains fanfics’ popularity.
Some people are shit at cooking. Probably because they’re 9 years old

I... Don't like fanfiction.
I think it's a useful tool to help develop writing skills, and don't discourage people from writing it. But I hate reading it and actively avoid it. I don't want to see other people's non-cannon versions of a character. I don't want to see other people's ideas and lifestyles forced on a character when the author made them a different way. It just feels wrong and is no longer that character. It's just your version of that character.
It's even worse when they completely change the character's voice.
Good on you for writing and developing your skills, but I'm gonna stick with my cannon characters.
Valid response as any other. I don't truthfully have that many opinions for or against fanfiction -- I just started getting recommended memes for it haha

Sadly a lot of mainstream characters get the same treatment in official media, though. People who didn't create the characters and don't respect the source material manage to end up in charge of making "official" content that changes the characters, often with the goal seeming to be to shove politics down our throats

Fanfiction from what I've seen largely just seems to be people trying to dive deeper into a world they came to love for no other reason than they care about or enjoy the content
To stretch a metaphor, if you just want to eat a well-made fettuccine Alfredo without interference from the people who just *have* to see what it would be like with a dash of sumac and some leek, that’s great. Hopefully nobody gets in your way so long as you aren’t going around smacking spices out of people’s hands.

It's, not bad? But god is *sure is* fandom embellishment.
