This is far too accurate. I still remember my teacher and principal pressuring me to change my answer on a question that literally asked how I felt about something. Five days of pressuring a child in grade school. A+

Yeah, you're right. Best to just ignore expertise, watch shouty people on YouTube and make shit up.

I approve this meme. Work, school, republicans, democrats, right/left…. Most groups are going to want you to stay in their narrative. So with vaccines and such- the “free thinkers” are all about critical thought- until someone comes to a different conclusion. Then that person couldn’t have reached that conclusion on their own “free thought” or “intelligence”- they must be a brainwashed follower. Of course, most people who aren’t in the “free thinker” camp on these issues will say the same- that those questioning these things are members of some conspiracy cult and can’t possibly have made their own intelligent conclusions.
Watch for the people who pick apart other people instead of attacking the arguments. Watch for people who try to invalidate a person instead of challenge their logic. Watch for people who can’t explain how their “free thought” got them to a conclusion. These are the ones trying to stop thinking or just following. Free thinking is a good thing, even when we disagree
But…. To really know if someone is thinking for themselves- watch for signs like the ones above. A person who can’t tell you how they got there isn’t thinking, they’re following or feeling.
I have to say I agree completely with @guest_. I'd also add one more thing. It's important to have people around you that can or will disagree with you on things. As long as you can keep it civil and friendly it's a very important step in figuring out your own thoughts and allows us to push further than we would otherwise. Surrounding yourself with like minded people is comfortable but you won't grow well as a person if you live in a echo chamber.
1000% @lucky11. The world has many perspectives. To an omnipotent observer there is one truth, but to each of us information is subjective. Having ideas be challenged, traditions, institutions is healthy. I think it’s very important that all involved don’t take things personally- even though the stakes often make these things personal- debate of ideas is about the ideas, to challenge a belief is not to attack a person- unless of course we are talking about beliefs of intolerance that say certain people shouldn’t exist or be allowed the rights and privileges allowed anyone of a different group who hasn’t committed an act to have such things revoked. That’s my line- a tolerant society cannot tolerate intolerance. We can listen to controversial views but not entertain or give platform to that which seeks to lessen other human beings against their peers.
Maybe we will one day find out there is a mainstream media conspiracy to silence that one out of ten dentists but I think I’ll still use toothpaste in the meantime.
