On volkswagens and many other cars, turning the key would have the same effect as pressing lock/unlock on the remote. Horn, flashing lights and everything. Cool fact: on my friends jetta, turning the key to lock and holding it in the turn position closes the sunroof and windows.
Carlover4ever yea my friend has a jetta too you can roll them up or down like that my altima could only roll them down with the key fob but not up I was jealous lol
They hide it so people can waste money calling aaa or they can charge you $100+ for a *new* key (when they just open your old key and put in a $1.60 battery) this is why I prefer my older cars they don't have all this bull shit!
Its bullshit if you can't open your car door because a little battery decided to die. I walk up to may car stick the key in the lock and turn it, that's if I lock my doors at all. My town is so bloody small if anybody sees somebody other than you near your car they are liable to get shot or have the cops called. Furthermore my one car was made in the 1970's and the other in the 80's they won't get far if they steal them i'd just meet them at the nearest gas station.
The key opens the car doors automatically, and if the battery's die, they won't be able to open the doors. By removing that cover, the doors can be opened manually. Hope that makes sense

Oh that makes sense. I've never had a car that did that so it made me confused. Thanks! :)
Well what are we looking at? Anyone care to let me in on this one?

The car is isually unlocked by pressing unlock on the key fob if the battery in the key fob dies you can take off the plastic cover to reveal the hidden key hole to unlock the door
Thanks for the simple nice reply !!! I don't Understand why some have to have such a hateful demeanor is such a simple post which would help a lot of other people in which this may happen to and they say "security" well if no one else has a key to your car then I don't think it really matters considering they still cannot get in your car either if it's disclosed or not!!! Thinking is just like in the other car it's just the fact that it's disclosed, correct me if I'm wrong. Yes it is a way of probably making money is what it actually is or at least that's what it seems to be . Thanks Stoner for clarifying that!
Also again as Far as the security part mentioned I mean if they want to get in someone's car I don't think it really matters if you're speaking of an alarm going off bc it don't even pertain to this situation of the post if you ask me!! It wouldn't stop anybody from breaking into your car either way if it was disclosed or not.....? I think this is primarily to help others that as a person who initially posted this.... I cannotstand why people can't just stick to the subject yet blow it out of proportion so if you don't like the post don't comment on it!
Thanks for telling this tip. Since I travel a lot a helpful tip like this could get me out of a problem till I get home. Again thanks and keep up the good hacks
I had my key battery die, on the morning of my mom's funeral , of all days. I used the key to manually open the car door. Then I popped the hood to my car opened the fuse box and pulled the fuse that went to the horn and car alarm(this location in in your manual). Now the alarm is still going off ( light blinking inside) but no sound, but you can drive the car until your able to buy a new battery. (This only works if your alarm DOESN'T have a kill switch ) this is supposibly, under the steering wheel , I way to disconnect the alarm there but I couldn't so I improvised .
No it doesn't set the alarm off.when you turn the lock cylinder to the unlock position it diables the alarm. The alarm goes off if the window is broken from vibration or the handle is pulled from the inside.
Our dealership neglected to inform us of this--discovered it a year later--after much confusion and thinking the key fob broke. Not everyone has been using a fob for years--they should inform the buyer! :)
I have a VW bug. It has this little button the door used to unlock it from the inside...and a slot for a key on the outside...you know like normal cars. This picture looks like it's on the inside of the door. If you have made it that far you are good. Get in and drive. When my key fob battery died I just unlocked it with the key, hit the unlock on the door for the passengers, and off we went.

The key slot on this vw is covered you have to pop it off and it reveals the hidden key slot. This is the outside of the door I don't know how you think this is the inside
It happened to me recently at the mall. I didn't realize I could pop off that hidden key slot cover to open the car door with a key. VW showed me the slot at their garage. It's so helpful to know that!
That's info that the car sales person should have told you.... That's important to know. My person told me how to get into my car in case the sensor doesn't pick up the key fob's signal
Yep, I had that happen. Luckily the newer cars has AAA free for 2 years and a hidden key inside the remote key. Then he charged the hidden battery in the car in hatch back area and charged long enough to get to dealership to get new battery. Pretty helpless. Manual was read, but couldn't get in at first to review it. Finally found manually key in remote.
My fusion has this. Also has a symbol on the part you remove. And it's in the manual. Doesn't do ya any good if you lock yourself out and don't know the code to put in. Lol
What a bunch of morons. Read your owner's manual...
Seriously. If you're dumb enough to drive a $25000 car without ever even checking your owner's manual... you deserve to pay the $100 AAA fee. It's called an idiot fee for a reason.
This whole thread is ridiculous, someone who doesn't read their car manual is shown a standard feature and posts their findings on the Internet and then a bunch of sheep bleat about how stupid VW is or the OP or the person that contradicts them in a later post. Fact is when you spend the amount of money you do on a car or a boat or any bloody piece of tech. Take the time to read the owners manual and understand it. Before you post on the Internet and show everyone else how lazy and ignorant you are. End of story and now I have to get the flock out of here.
Those little things are replaceable. Just go to eBay and look up very door lock and then get the ones that have the hole cut out and match your cars color. My 03' Jetta has that open hole on the drivers side.
I'm sorry that society needs this explained, and even more sorry that people make the comments on this post that they have. I'm also sorry people drive cars without knowing how the stuff works.
If you all looked at the manual or hand book it do s say it's there along with where your hidden emergency key is as well, I've only had my VW a month I already new this.
So I told myself to not get involved in this darn thread.I said, self,"don't get involved in this darn thread",but I just had to anyway, I went thru every comment and only one of the replies says where the hidden glory hole is located on That Person's car, but I'm wondering about the one in the pic provided above being that it's a vw.is it drivers side?or is it truly secret squirrel status and put on an unexpected door?I have a manual but I don't want to go get it because I don't have to, I was just curious.
I'd just assume it's on the drivers door. I didn't want to post on here either but This thread is full of too many Internet hero's and people who don't bother reading any post's...
I never read owners manuals. Unless I'm gay and have no friends. Maybe the person who posted this trick doesn't have a manual, they aren't permanently attached to the car. And for the tards that are blaming the salesman, who said this person bought their vw from a salesman. Maybe they bought the car used from joe blow and without the owners manual. It's crazy how people feel they need to prove how smart they are while looking like a fool instead by assuming things they have no clue about and insulting people for trying to help out others.
NEWs have a key that pulls apart so you have a detachable 'valet' key. What you are left with is a regular key that opens the door in the keyhole conveniently provided.
Electric key battery dies and no place to manually insert to open?
Pop off the small panel on the door handle and find the hidden key hole. Open door, start car and go buy a new battery for your key fob.
Or u could've bought a new battery ... CR2035 watch battery sold in all walmarts, electronic stores, and pharmacies ... Keep one in ur wallet or purse so you don't have to scratch up or take apart ur car
Have an 02 volvo hatchback.doors are keyed but no key on the hatchback!!
So when the fob went have to leave everything unlocked to get into the hatch..
That's why I always read the owner's manual when I get a new (to me) vehicle. If there isn't one I google search until I find one. No telling what little helpful pieces of info you might find...
U still have to have the key to gain access to the car.... then alarm will sound until u put the key in the ignition.. I'm not exactly sure how that's a new way to break into cars..... beings you have to have the key to the car to gain access!!
I don't understand every vw I have had has always had a keyhole I sometimes use it to close all the windows and sunroof in one shot avoiding climbing back in turning the key to power
I would ream out a hole so I could stick the key through. It almost looks like they got lazy and forgot to make the key hole accessible. Germans love to make things difficult.. lol
wow google it I've read my book i have a 2010 torrent i didn't get spare keys ,sounds like i should have is it the dealership responsibilty to give me spares (frist time buyer) all my other cars older models came with spares .its nice to have the luxsury of keyless entry but i guess the answer is always keep a couple spare batteries in with the special key lol
They can make the same part for LHS Doors and RHS doors (Cheaper) - its only incase the key fob battery goes flat - the alarm will go off once the key is in the ignition - or the separate remote key switch (push button start cars) is activated.
VW did not hide it however should be explained to you at the time of vehicle delivery specially when keyless remote stops working due to low batteries or your vehicle battery fails.
So let make it clearer for most of yo out there...a dead keyfob battery means no remote operation of door locks.(here we assume that the car key is actually a key plus the fob).to get in the car, simply uncover the key hole on the drivers door.immobilizer reads the key and the engine runs.to lock the car when you arrive, simply lock by key.even keyless cars have some key in their fib or card to use when out of keyfob battery.
Because it is over engineered Nazi garbage. Look it up Adolf Hitler was one of the primary factors in the Volkswagen (the people's car) going into production. This is Adolf just screwing with the world a little more.
They hide it because nobody every tries a key in the door. And the lack of use creates corrosion and lock failure. As well as aesthetic presentation makes the sales higher. I am in the security industry and have watched people stand outside their car for fifteen minutes pressing buttons on the remote with a key dangling off of it and never even think about putting it in the key hole on the door when it isn't covered with plastic.
Car companies would like to remove the lock cylinder all together. The only downfall is when the battery is dead or other electronic failure.. ifor you look, most new cars are a push button on the dash with no key ignition what so ever. I regularly have people in shock when I remove the key from inside their remote that they never new was there
I Think the Verizon did Cover that Key hole in the Door Handle,Soo## its Uniform the looks of the Car...I'm sure we all know that when bought a new car there's always a Manual about your Car..All we gotta do is Read the Manual book..We Always find the Information there..
A lot of car manufacturer are doing this, if you don't have a actual key hole to unlock your car look under the handle or at the end of the handle and you will see a square hole take the key out of the fob stick the key in the square hole and pry the cover off and you will see the key hole, sometimes they are a little hard to get off but they will come off.
Some of us buy used cars that have had the manual filched. Even if there is one, you might have read about changing tires and missed the door lock details, so if you're outside the locked car, the book is out of reach. You might be able to get the online version on your computer in your locked house, but not if you're trying to get into your car on a rainy night. If you have a smart phone, okay, you might get information from that, but I have 3 dumb phones and 2 Toyotas, so I don't know why I'm writing this, except that friends with VWs might be interested, and I like to find a use for "filched."
You cannot unlock my beetle with a key. You must use the fob. My handle is one piece metal and without a small plastic piece to remove. My jeep's alarm blares if you use a key. You must also use the fob. I last set this off accidentally in a cemetery, after a funeral. Both vehicles are 2016.
Wow, someone posts something they have learned and think it may help someone else, and then some people have to get so mean and hateful. If you have to be that way, why even posts? Who knows, this posts probably helped a lot of people.
Hilarios...you fucking idiots!
It's not only in your owners manual, but your sales person should have let you know, as mine did. Fobs are battery powered....what did you think was going to happen?
"Oh well...I'm miles from home, I guess shit will sort its self out!"
Bwahahahahahahahaha
The key is to focus on the picture and the comments long enough before you ask stupid questions. I wish I had this trick when the same thing happened to me. Thanks for the hack
Hadn’t used my Freelander for a month. Both sets of fobs flat.Used the key in the fob to get in.Alarm set off,but cuts out once you put the fob in.Once the engine starts the fob battery charges.Six year old car original fob battery.Apparently changing the battery requires soldering !
It’s not made to use it when battery in your key is dead, but when battery in the car is flat/dead. So you can unlock the car, open the hood and replace the battery. So much stupid comments... for such a simple thing!
The only problem with this is that a lot of cars now are only started with a push to start button. I can open my car no problem, but I miss having a key in the ignition!
This is plainly stated in your owners manual, you know that manual that the owner meaning you are supposed to or should read to get familiar with your vehicle. Stop blaming others for your laziness, they did inform you.
All keyless cars have this. On your fob is a lever to pull out the key. On the door handle is a cover. Also somewhere around the steering wheel is a cover to put key into a starter/ignition like cars used to.
Seriously. If you're dumb enough to drive a $25000 car without ever even checking your owner's manual... you deserve to pay the $100 AAA fee. It's called an idiot fee for a reason.

What did you think the key in your remote was for?
Idiots
