"The number of mass shootings in Australia—defined as incidents in which a gunman killed five or more people other than himself, which is notably a higher casualty count than is generally applied for tallying mass shootings in the U.S. TLDR: Mass shootings in AUS need at least 5 dead people for the govt to classify it as a mass shooting, where in America you only need to INJURE OR kill four or so people to class it as a mass shooting. With how stringent the definiton is in australia you can damn well convince yourself that there are "no mass shootings" becuase the paperwork and fine print make it look like there is no mass shootings. Don't kid yourself, firearm incidents that would classify as a mass shooting in America still happen despite how Australia has convinced everybody that gun control works if you switch up the requirements on how you identify a mass shooting.
You can debate the definition of a mass shooting all you want, that doesn't change the fact that it went to zero, irrespective of the number of deaths per occurance. Didn't the US up that number from 3 to 4 recently?
Okay. So by the standards of Australia, you can shoot and injury a whole boatload of people, and it not be labeled a mass shooting. Makes sense. Also, yes. The parameters need to be the same in order to be compared properly.
anthracite, I specifically noted that you only have to INJURE persons in the US in order for it to classified as a mass shooting. If you get 15 people who get injured by a shooter in Australia, it doesnt count becuase no one died. Any reasonable person who witnessed such an event would call it a mass shooting.
I really don't get why anyone would want to shoot up a school in the first place though. What are you going to gain from that? You'll end up either dead, or in prison for a long time
Shock and awe, a hot minute of infamy for being someone who killed people who couldn't feasibly fight back, misguided thinking about the proper way to retaliate against bullying/discrimination/non-acceptance, because some god told you to do it or some people just might be psychopaths who have no problem abusing a justice system while claiming mental insanity to live a life behind bars with food and care supplied to them, the list goes on and on.
It could also be for notoriety. Some of these kids are marginalized and feel left out of society. You shoot up a school, everybody knows him. everybody remembers him. They will never forget him again.
ya good idea. when the cops start carrying fire extinguishers then i'll be convinced its better then training and arming teachers and for thous that don't realize it cops are just armed citizens like any trained armed teacher so if you're afraid of teachers having guns you should be afraid of cops with guns to. as for Australia they have more private owned guns now than before the band so i guess we should expect mass shooting any day now. or maybe it wasn't the gun ban maybe it was other factor that caused the drop in shooting.like mabe economics change of a government change who knows cause no study will be done anti gunners are to busy trying to ban guns no time to save lives with studies that might prove them wrong
Reason no. 1 why people aren't heroes.... They don't wanna be moved to number 1 on the shooter's list. I've seen people who had gun, actual gun, and people telling them Shoot him, or he's gonna kill us all respond with You don't know that, and I don't wanna make him kill me, I might get through this. I'm pretty sure there are extinguishers in banks, or in planes, but no one will use it they'll all lay down. If he comes over to you and puts a knife under your throat or yells Allah is great, then you kick him in the balls.
Oh look, a Muslim hater. What a rare sight. NOT.
It's fundamentalism we need to get rid of, not blame one religion in particular. There are Muslim terrorists, Christian terrorists (does the name Breivik ring a bell?), Muslim fundamentalists (Saudi Arabia and other countries whose law derives from Sharia), Christian fundamentalists (Texas and other southern US states), good Muslims, good Christians. The more extreme you go, the worse. That's it. Don't stone someone else from stuff your group is guilty of as well.
Whoa. As a matter of fact most terrorists in Europe are for now Communists but as @pokethebear noticed, I don't know what they used to yell. Viva LA revolucion? They were mostly Russian . They probably yelled Na zdorovye! I'm not Muslim hater. Most of my friends are Muslims(not by practicing religion, but by ethnicity). I tell them as well if they advocate Sharia stoning and Islam supremacy I'd kick them in the balls immediately. I hate motherfucking terrorists.
And Also I never said terrorists are Muslim. Allahu ekber is simply Arabic language, be they Christian Palestinian, Jewish or Rastafarian terrorists, if they live in "Arab" countries they say Allahu ekber, ekber is adjective. I say vallah(i billahi) almost every day and I'm Jewish (non practising) Slavic (non practising) Torlakian Kazakh. But, we all agree, we all hate anyone who's a dildo.
@trustnthngmulder Chill dude, I was talking about pokethebear who said "But muh Christians don't do that and they're also democrats!" while ignoring the fact that terrorism isn't exclusive to one faith, and also ignoring that when it comes to western civilization, Christians tend to be more autocracy-leaning than non-religious/spiritual people. I actually agree with you on the hero thing. Also, @silvermyth, I don't live in America either but I'm genuinely wondering why that matters in this context. We don't have to experience a school shooting to know about it if that's what you're getting at.
You did react "There are less Muslim ones than Christian" like I told Allahu ekber yelling ones were Muslims. But whatever. We all agree we hate them whatever creed they are. As my Muslim (by ethnicity, not by faith) pals do. And unlike you, they (as well as yours truly @trustnthngmulder) have mujahadeen terrorists in their broader family. So much of "not living in USA"
I said Muslim as an ethnicity. I was reacting to someone calling me non-American(it's edited out now, so I can't remember who it was). I find that very offensive. I'm trans American (American born in Serbian body) :), but jokes aside, I seem to love USA more than you folks. And it's ridiculous. And we're on the same side. Palestinian Christians say Allahu ekber as well I never said terrorists = Muslim (as I said I had terrorists in my family, dead now). And serbian extremists, christians, were blessed by Serbian patriarch, that's like Pope here. They have it embroidered in their flag.
You don't say. You're gonna teach me stuff. You should sometimes say "Maybe somebody else knows something else that I don't know". It's good for you. It's just too long to explain, just trust me, I know hundreds of people who are Muslim by ethnicity. Damn people. Just say "Maybe I'm wrong.
But you can't be Muslim by ethnicity, because it's not one. That's like saying you're Christian by ethnicity, or Hindu by ethnicity. Anybody can be a Muslim, it has nothing to do with race. I won't say that I'm wrong, because I'm not in this situation. You can switch religions, you can't switch ethnicity.
So... You want bigger explanation... Roman Empire divided right down the river Drina (there's Nobel Prize winning book about the river, I believe Robert DE niro's daughter is named Drina). Left side went with Latin west (Latin script and Latin church) and right bank went with East. Bosnia couldn't choose sides, so chose neither. Bosnians weren't neither Catholic nor Orthodox, they were baboon Christians or something (baboon cult, yeah). Then the Turkey(Ottoman) came and Bosnians converted almost 100%. Then some Serbs killed some Turks and escaped in bulks, in 18th century, in thousands. To an Austro-Hungarian border (today Croatia and Bosnia). And also there were parts of old Croatia and Bosnia ........
......that were then occupied by running Serbian nobility since 15th century. So there were Bosnian Serbs, Croats and Bosnians, Serbian Croats, Serbians and Bosnians and Croatian Serbs, Bosnians and Croats. And then many of them turkified and/or changed religion, in least numbers Serbs and Croats from Croatia. So we had - all of the above plus subgroup Muslim (for example Croat, Croatian Muslim, Croatian Serb Muslim, Croatian Serb, Croatian Bosnian and Croatian Bosnian Muslim... All living in Croatia) . But when Serbia did its own reconquista it did something different from Greece, Croatia, Romania... It violently expelled all the Muslims without taking Serbs from Bosnia back in their place (Greeks expelled Turks but took Pontic Greek back), killed hundreds and burned down everything. INCLUDING Serbian Muslims (Serbs who converted (hundreds of thousands)).GTFO to Bosnia!
A Serbian Muslim is a Serbian person who is Muslim. Being Serbian is the ethnicity, and beong Muslim is the religion. None of what you just typed is relevant to the point.
So, brothers, literally brothers, lost their "Serbian" adjective. Cause they didn't live in Serbia no more. In order not to be confused with Bosnian Muslims(later called Bosniaks) they couldn't be called that, nor Bosnian, nor Bosnian Serbs. They were welcomed openheartedly from Bosnian Muslims and they don't tell them apart today, they love them that much. You can tell, mostly by surnames and place where they live, but it's unimportant for both of them. And then, Serbia conquered eastern part of leftover Muslim states, Kosovo and Sanjak and now Serbia had Serbian (ex)Serbs Muslim, Serbian Bosnians Muslim(Serbian dwelling Bosniaks, who are there since forever) and also Bosnian Muslims (Bosniaks from Bosnia who somehow got to be in Serbia now) and Bosnian Serb turkified Muslims. And Croatian Muslims(small %) and... And when you add Montenegro, and Macedonian Muslims Torbeshi and Bulgarian Pomaks, and Gorani, who Serbs call Nashi (ours) south Serbia converts who not only.....
OK, but being Muslim still isn't an ethnicity. You can be born into a Muslim family, but at the end of the day, whether you stay one or change your beliefs is up to you.
@pokethebear yelling something while killing someone doesn't change the fact that a person will end up dead and that murder is a despicable thing. So why is that even relevant?
@trustnthngmulder so you mean, moderate Muslims? Or people who were born into a Muslim family but don't practice the religion? I'm not sure I get what you mean, I guess it's because neither of us are native English speakers. But do I understand correctly that what you mean are people who were born into a Muslim family, therefore have more experience with Islam than us average joes, but don't actively practice it?
Anyway there's a lot of bias and bigotry when it comes to Muslims, like yes a lot of terrorists are Muslims but those usually come from Shia countries (fundamentalist countries basically) but nobody ever mentions that Indonesia is the country with the most Muslims. You can be a Muslim as long as you're not also an Arab, if you are then everybody's suspicious.
