The "Libra Pondo" was a unit of measure. Libra meaning scales or weigh/weight, and ponds being the unit. Libra meaning to weigh or weight is also the name of the zodiac associated with the image of scales- hence its corolation to the zodiac. So the English word "pound" finds itself an already shortened anglicized version of the Latin "libra pondo" and upon further shortening becomes Lbs, in reference to the "libra" which is omitted in common use.
