Maybe he became deaf and it's his way to listen to music

Or he could be looking at it for mistakes, like an editor.

Or maybe just trying to read music to learn it?

That's.... not really how it works... The sound really depends on what instrument is being played. It's not a "language" more of a "cipher" in the way that you can use it to perform on your instrument.

Except that can be exactly how it works - I sometime just read through the music (on the bus, at home, before rehearsal), maybe humming or tapping along, before playing it. That way I recognise the rythms and have an idea what I'm about to do.

Or he could be a chorister or singer, and it's required for us to be able to read music just as he is doing it.

This is helpfull especialy when I compose a peice. Helps to jump from one instrument to another without getting stuck in a jam loop.

And no one thinks he's a musician. Maybe trying to memorize it or whatever. Fun joke, but clearly not "next level hipster bullshit."

When I read a conversation in a novel, I "hear" the discussion. When I read music, I "hear" the music. Same thing. Music is a written language.
