I bet if you asked a portion of the arabic speaking population in a predominently arabic speaking region if they wanted to use a hindu numbering system then they'd have the same no answer.
first this question is a trap and i hate that bull shit. second from what i understand there are 3 different arabic number systems America uses western arabic looks like india uses hindu arabic and middle east uses eastern so the 57 probably don't know its a trick question but the 43 aren't any better or maby im way wrong . i think we have some one on here from india that would know way more about the subject then me.
I find it misleading because not everyone knows that the numbers we recognize originated in the middle East. I find it misleading because of instead of just saying"numbers", Arabic has to be added to try and trap the person being questioned into some kind of perceived racism. The layperson may not know that 1, 2, 3, etc are Arabic numerals but everyone feels the need to point out "willful ignorance" and "idiocy" of the 57%.
I understand that. Not everyone knows that though. Everybody I know just calls them numbers. I don't think I have ever heard anyone refer to numerals as being Arabic in daily life.
The point here is that, at the core, it is indicitive of the failings of education in the US...
Way before any supposed ethnocentric based racisim comes into play.
If the school you went to was even okish, you'd have been taught that the current base 10 numbering system is arabic in origin.
So people shouldn't learn history and shouldn't be ridiculed when they don't?
Fuck that.
This is one of the most basic points that should be taught when it comes to math, as later on (not historically, just advanced courses), the Greek characters come in. Knowing how and WHY these characters are different is a huge part in expression of higher mathematical concepts.
Try writing a quadratic equation in roman numerals... or, worse, define a range. That shit would look horrifying.
I wonder why?
yes
no

Huh... how about that. I just looked it up and I stand corrected.
