She knew.
And it was not just they wanted to save money for the wedding.
He aged out of his Dad's insurance and his insulin was 1200 a month. They couldn't afford it. So he just tried to space it out. But that is really unsafe. His doctor recommended he try a cheaper version. It was 25 a month. Problem was he was not doing well with the new medicine.
He originally had a pump but he couldn't afford it anymore so had to switch to shots.
Yes they were saving money for a wedding but they didn't at first seek out cheaper medicine just to save money for the wedding.
But I stand by what I said. She should of known how stupid it is to switch like that.
When life and death depends on what and when you take medicine you don't fuck with the medication. You work to pay for it. Not buy cheaper like you are choosing a cheaper ketchup.
Why is she the stupid one rather thank the husband, the doctor or anyone else involved? I feel like she holds the least amount of responsibility for what happened to him.
He was a grown man, that was his decision to make. Not hers.
However, I fully agree that it was a stupid decision alltogether. Paying for a wedding feels probably nice and it's become a social obligation for most people, but the most important thing in a marriage is to have your loved one by your side, and now death already did them apart because of really poor financial decisions. If they had poured the money saved for the wedding into insulin it would have been better in the long run.
He paid for his side of the idea. And if you read the story she is like yeah we thought let's just keep using the cheaper one.
Even though they already switched the guy from pump to shots and even switched the tester to a cheaper unreliable tester.
And according to the news she herself had to take meds as well. How did she not go wait maybe we should think about this long and hard.
Their doctor recommended the cheaper but they way they have it is like well if you are determined to get cheaper try this I hear it's as cheap as you can get.
But how did he not notice "wow I'm feeling awful let's switch back"?
I still don't think the girl is to blame, because he's not a child, she didn't have to make decisions for him. Advice, sure, but it's really hard to give appropriate advice to heavily medicated family member, because you're neither the doctor nor the patient himself, even though you ingest the same meds, you never precisely know how they feel. But yeah all in all it's a really sad story and a big part of the blame is on a system who couldn't make vital medicine more available.
Okay I still think the insulin thing is fucked up, but this is misleading. According to at least one of the articles he hadn't been able to afford the expensive insulin period - he'd been on his dad's health insurance but had "aged out of it."
.
The insulin cost between 900-1200 month and he had already started RATIONING it when a doctor suggested he try a Wal-Mart OTC brand.... For $25.00. This insulin takes longer to actually take effect than the insulin he had been using. It "did not agree with his body," and he slipped into a diabetic coma.
.
The wedding was very likely a part of why he was saving his money, but nothing about this sounds like it was the only motivation here. The doctor's advice sounds a bit sketchy, the guy himself sounds a bit desperate, and it's just a depressing situation all around
The govt influence will reduce prices and kill the quality..
Take it from me, I live in India and only the poorest go to govt controlled hospitals..
Nexus n cartels must be taken down by govt.. Not Control the market
i'd have not had the wedding just yet. im not saying it's his fault or anything as you should not speak ill words about unfortunate people.
but it's a bad choice.
you can always have the wedding on another day, you're not a werewolf that requires blood moon on the exactly 17th to get married.
but you NEED medications!
have your priorities straight!
I'd like to point out that I live in one of those horrid socialist countries where healthcare is tax financed and I have never heard of anyone dying from diabetes.
Tbh, and I readily admit I don't know what I'm talking about here, but from the excruciatingly little I've read I'm fairly certain America could make changes here without actually providing free healthcare. Whatever your stance on America's healthcare, from the little I've read a lot of the insulin issues seem to have arisen from corruption and political/patent bullshit on the side of the drug companies.
.
The government probably could step in and say "enough is enough," though I imagine that would open another legal can of worms. Even so, the cost of insulin is unreasonable and should never have gotten to this point

1. $
2. The republican parties unwillingness to support any form of government interference in the markets.
