I mean- all sexism asides (or maybe there are still issues with what I’m about to say(?):
Of course your character might be a choice you make to match your self image, or what you aspire to. It may be that character is who you want to experience the game world as of that you want to try at least a hint of a different perspective than your normal one…
You could prefer the stats or the voice acting or the style and design or some other thing that makes you choose a certain character. Or maybe you just figure in menus or cutscenes or gameplay you’ll be staring at this character for The next X hours or weeks and you want to pick a character based on that. And I mean- I’m not going to fault someone for wanting or not wanting to stare at some often shirtless “masculine” dude for hours on end while they perform physical tasks. It’s not something everyone enjoys.
tbh thats my main factor in choosing a character in a voiced game like mass effect, the femshep voice actress is just leagues better than the male shep voice actor.
My main factor is if the game has a customization option, then I'm able to make myself look pretty :3
Either that or it's like dark souls where I hate the Male injured sound
I just started Cyberpunk 2077, it's first person so I can't even see my character, and I still made it female just because I'd rather listen to a girl talk than a man.
don't know about other games, but in combat arms, the now defunct FPS, choosing a female character was slightly faster (I'm told), but they never were killed by a nut shot
I usually make a character that represents me (both in terms of looks and personality) on my first playthrough and then go wild with the next ones.
Recently I started playing a game called Solasta: Crown of the Magister which is basically DnD in video game form (with dice rolls, ability checks, alignment and everything), and you can create your whole squad in that game (including writing a backstory if you want!) so of course I spent waaaaay too much time on it lol
