In my experience so far its been more about refining who I've become by applying real-world experiences to the ideas I expanded and refined in my late 20s.
One funny aspect is the conformity some people "rebel" against is a creation, and they actually are conforming more. "Oh, society is so racist? I'll treat people equally!" when everybody you know holds that out to be the way people should act. Or "I'm so countercultural because I speak the unvarnished truth" when in reality so does everyone else you interact with.
I'm a rebel because I don't do what everyone else does but everyone else is also a rebel so I just do the mainstream stuff. (That's just being normal with extra steps)
