She attends a school that was previously only for whites. They have hair regulations, but none in place for afro hair. The teachers were making the black girls straighten their hair or braid it because the afro look was "distracting others from learning" and "it's unlady like" The head of education ordered the school be audited for racism, and suspended this hair code of conduct
Wow. I mean I *could* understand banning xxl afro hair in the front row because THAT could actually have an effect for the students behind, but this... This is some new level shit. How can your natural female features be "unlady like"? And why the hell does it matter? It's a really good thing that they stopped this nonsense but I'm shocked that it even happened in the first place. Like no one in the school board thought that it was a bad idea...?
Well it used to be an all white girls private school until 1994, so I think a majority of teachers may have been white, if not all? And it's a "prestigious school" so they want their students to look "neat". It was pretty bad. One teacher was accused of handing a girl vaseline and making her straighten her hair in class, another refered to a girls dreadlocks as "a birds nest" and I think she made her take them out(?)
Yeah but... I'm paper white, most people I know are, and it isn't an excuse, these folks were living in Africa so even if they saw a lot of white people at work they must have been aware that afro was a pretty normal thing. I kind of understand (but do not condone at all) their twisted logique about looking neat by they own standards but that is still fucked up.
Anyways thanks for your input on the subject. Can't say it made my day better, but that's an interesting read.
It wasn't even her hair. It was a weave and a publicity stunt.
I'm going fishing. Mostly using worms for perch. Sometimes I get a bite from a catfish. But sometimes the bream just come on in and eat the bait. It looks like a nibble but you don't pull. Better off to let them go.
The school system and it's rules confuse me. Why would someone's hair get someone in trouble. Schools want us to be individuals but yet they all want their students to obey strict dress codes. I got in trouble in school becasue I had a hoop earring and not a stud earring.
Unless it's literally so big it's obstructing someone's view of the whiteboard or overflowing onto the person behind them's desk, and they don't want to change seats or trim it, this sounds like a bunch of ridiculous, unreasonable bullshit
Okay, but that one in the bottom right looks pretty damn distracting, as in blocking the full view distracting. Aside from that, this is absolute bullshit and teachers need to be smacked, to say nothing of fired.
The one in the bottom looks like it would block the person behind her's view or get on their desk, which is what I was talking about. But that doesn't mean she shouldh have to straighten it. The teacher could give her the option of sitting at the back of the class (something tall people have to do often), cutting her hair, wearing it in a different style of her choosing altogether (be it buns, in a scarf, braids, whatever). Forcing them to straighten it is ridiculous. Also, white people get afros too, just less common, so idk why anyone, including the teachers, is calling it black hair to begin with
Ok this whole thing is out of wack if you ask me...
Private schools have strict rules - its the name of the game. Rules for KIDS are there to discipline them, especially for adolescents because they're going to challenge the shit out of them. Again its for DISCIPLINE. Instead of adhering to rules, this laaitie fuckin toi-toi's and puts the usual 'Racism' stamp on it to get her way. This is not how we should be raising the youth. The youth need to learn that they will not get everything they want because they make a big enough noise about it - this is the grown up version of a temper tantrum and needs to be nipped in the bud.
Buuuuuut on the other hand the school could have acknowledged that her hair was done neatly and presentably - if visibility was an issue then sit her at the back or trim.
Diplomacy is fundamental but unfortunately in this country even when asking for little, people take it as too much.
How can stating that naked natives with no political structure be oversimplifying? They were indigenous natives. They seldom wore clothing. They had no actual political structure, The group structure was familial. The Europeans just organised them and then lost control.
Other cultures had other ways of organizing and governing other than familial ties. And what is the point of saying that they ran around naked? It's not relevant that they didn't see the need to wear clothes. Even then many culutures had their own style of dress that wasn't naked or loin cloth.
It's oversimplifying to say that they ran around naked and had no political structure just because they we're different from what you're used to or simpler than they are now.
