A train may be 2 or 3 hours slower, but theres also no security and that "get here two hours early" shit. Plus, better legroom and you can walk around. Trains are great.
I took a train trip from coast to coast last year and loved it. All the reasons you said make trains so much better than flying. Plus no headaches from the pressurization in planes.

Making a 12 hour drive to Disney World next month, can confirm.
Plane ticket from Dallas to San Diego $600. Gas equivalent to drive round trip currently is about that. So anymore than one person, why fly? It’s only 24 hours...
I assume you're including a night in a motel otw and then a night in a motel otw back? Otherwise that round trip would be around $400 for me. I've done Bakersfield to Dallas driving non-stop, I'm sure I could push a little further and do a SD to Dallas trip in one shot.
Son: we’re going straight to grandmas? No getting sidetracked?

European here, my family and a couple other families I know (for example my boyfriend's family) do that too. When you go on vacation to a place that's less than 15 hours away (in my case - I'm Czech - that would mean the farthest point is like north of Italy or middle of Croatia), you just pack up and drive.
