It can. Desertification is a real problem that will eventually have to taken seriously by every mainland country near deserts. One of China's oldest and iconic city's itself is being covered by sand and experiences more sandstorms more frequently than ever before. Look up Dunhuang city on youtube.

Do deserts do anything good for the planet? could they just keep pushing the wall thicker and thicker untill its in the desert?

If I remember there is a story of someone planting trees at the edge of a dessert and has been taking it back themselves.

The Sahara desert is the source of many nutrients in the Amazon, even though it's across the Atlantic. As the Sahara grows, the Amazon becomes more fertile, so, yes, deserts can do good for the planet.
