I am in India and we also have this. Generally it's based on gems. I was in Ruby house for a while and then I was in Embrald.
It helps, sorting students. Especially during sports meets.
The education system of the Maldives is also UK based and we have houses as well. In preschool we had colours for the names but in high school which was an all girl's school the houses were named after queens we had when the country used to be a kingdom.
The competitive aspect is true as well, at least in my experience. People say that 11yo Harry hating 11yo Draco so much is unbelievable, but I was 7 years old and in the Red house and the hatred I felt for any and all people in the Green house was purer and stronger than any emotion I have felt since.
We did this. But you don't get sorted, it's just automatically assigned. Also if you have a brother or sister, they'll be in the same house as you. I was in Ruby house (our houses were based on gemstones)
Pretty much every school - private and public - in Australia has this system for sporting competition. I was in a school house when I was at at public school in the 1970s, my daughter is in a house at the moment.
My kid goes to school in the US and they have “houses.” It’s a private school with a boarding program. I wonder if that’s part of it. Because half the students are physically in one of three houses. Then the day students get to be honorary members of a house.
Makes sense, but serious question. Why do you need to be sorted into houses for sports competitions? Do you only compete against other houses within your school or do you go up against teams from other schools as well?
In mine we competed against the other houses in the school. It wasn’t just sports either so we had lots of other academic and talent based competitions where you represented your house. Since you get sorted randomly it’s a great way to make new friends and engage in more activities. Each house has a trophy case and you get to sort of keep passing that on to the new students as you graduate

Also, school teams were different, that would consist of people from all houses. It's kinda like state teams and national team.
All the state teams compete with each other, but the national teams have players from all round the country.
Another example would be football club teams and national teams.
I'm in the UK
I'm not aware of this
I used to be in Murphy house.
