Victoria Australia, public transport is a joke, it's late and it's more expensive than a car. Public transport is meant for those that cannot afford a car, so it keeps people in the hole they are trying to get out of.
Really depends on the place. I live in Prague, the public transport is on time, covers the city quite nicely even at night. I take it daily and I haven't had any problems.
It’s not quite that bad, but I do in fact take a 40-minute bus that would be a 20-minute drive. It’s partially due to the stops, partially just the layover issue.

Depends on how good the public transport is where you live. For me in Stockholm a 40 min Train ride takes an hour by car. Bus usually takes longer than taking the car but it’s cheaper and like whatever, I can get up q0 min earlier if needed. I don’t go super long stretches though.
When I was in France, there was this one town I wanted to go to and it was a few hours away by car or like 2 days by public transport. We rented a car. (But did use public transport for the rest of the trip).
I would have to take a series of buses to get from my house to work. My job is shift work, weekends, nights. The bus doesn't run 24 hours and has modified weekend schedules. So I couldn't rely on it even if I wanted to.
It would take me 2.5 hours to get to work on public transport. And then I’d be trapped there overnight waiting for the trains and busses to restart. I can drive there in 20 minutes and leave whenever I like. Public Transport isn’t a reasonable choice for a lot of people.
