Classifying pedophilia as a sexual orientation instead of a paraphilia allows for more accurate research into the subject and at the same time removes its historical connection with homosexuality. Orientation is considered permanent so therapies are shifting towards resisting acting on urges instead of trying to remove the urge itself. This is progress towards preventing abuse.
Plus, demonizing those who *act on the desire* rather than those who have the desire is gonna make it way easier to convince people who have the desire to seek help instead of the “do I give in or do I off myself” dichotomy.

It's easier than that. Paedophilia isn't a sexual orientation because paedophiles exhibit different sexual orientations. While the majority are heterosexuals there are gay, lesbian, bi, pan and even ace pedophiles.
