Honestly, not the worst world view to hold. It's when they start incessantly pushing it on others, and act like victims when people see through it that the problems begin.
I mean….. we throw the word “respect” around a lot but most people seem to think “respect” means you just let people skate with whatever they want. Colleagues debate ideas all the time and respect each other and each other’s opinions. Saying an idea is wrong isn’t the same as saying an idea is idiotic for example.
A major problem is when people don’t respect themselves. They often don’t respect themselves enough to grow and adapt their opinions based on new inputs. People often end up valuing their ego or “winning” or clinging to a manufactured sense of identity over respecting themselves because it can be very hard to respect ourselves. Harder still when we aren’t living up to the ideals we respect in others but can’t muster the stuff to do better. It’s easier to pretend we are the type of person we respect and then cling to that stubbornly because to be proven wrong would mean admitting to ourselves and being seen as a real person and not carefully crafted and adopted rhetoric.
This reminds me of the Mythbusters. They were not and are still not friends (Jaime and Adam). They had a great respect for each other, the others ability to work, and the work they did, but generally didn't like each other. Contrarily, they did work well together because of that respect and their differing viewpoints. That and they acted like adults when they did have disagreements.
The Great A'Tuin, the World Turtle, of the species Chelys galactica, was the gigantic turtle upon whose back stood the 4 great elephants, and on those backs the Discworld was carried through space.
